Rush Limbaugh Scandal Proves Contagious for Talk-Radio Advertisers
Mar 10, 2012 12:00 AM EST Ninety-eight major advertisers—including Ford and Geico—will no longer air spots on Premiere Networks’ ‘offensive’ programs. Insiders say the loss will rock right-wing talk radio.
PrintEmailComments (495)
Rush Limbaugh made the right-wing talk-radio industry, and he just might break it.
Because now the fallout from the “**** ” slurs against Sandra Fluke is extending to the entire political shock-jock genre.
Premiere Networks, which distributes Limbaugh as well as a host of other right-wing talkers, sent an email out to its affiliates early Friday listing 98 large corporations that have requested their ads appear only on “programs free of content that you know are deemed to be offensive or controversial (for example, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Tom Leykis, Michael Savage, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity).”
This is big. According to the radio-industry website Radio-Info.com, which first posted excerpts of the Premiere memo, among the 98 companies that have decided to no longer sponsor these programs are “carmakers (Ford, GM, Toyota), insurance companies (Allstate, Geico, Prudential, State Farm), and restaurants (McDonald’s, Subway).” Together, these talk-radio advertising staples represent millions of dollars in revenue.
Valerie Geller, an industry insider and author of Beyond Powerful Radio, confirmed the trend. “I have talked with several reps who report that they're having conversations with their clients, who are asking not to be associated with specifically polarizing controversial hosts, particularly if those hosts are ‘mean-spirited.’ While most products and services offered on these shows have strong competitors, and enjoy purchasing the exposure that many of these shows and hosts can offer, they do not wish to be ‘tarred’ with the brush of anger, or endure customer anger, or, worse, product boycotts.”
There are already tangible signs that the three dozen national and local advertisers that have pulled their ads from The Rush Limbaugh Show are having a financial impact.

PM Images / Getty Images
For example, the ads that ran on Limbaugh’s WABC show in New York on Thursday consisted primarily of public-service announcements. Among the few actual advertisements were spots from a Newt Gingrich–associated super PAC, Lear Capital, and the conservative Hillsdale College. Media Matters has been monitoring national trends along the same lines. When PSAs for nonprofit organizations like Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the United Negro College Fund run in place of actual advertisements on radio, it means the show starts losing money for the local station. And make no mistake, money is the only barometer of success the industry ultimately cares about.
Women ages 24–55 are the prize advertising demographic, and you have a perfect storm emerging after Limbaugh’s Sandra Fluke comments.
Limbaugh helped prove that right-wing talk radio could be big business—promoting the idea that only conscious conservative bias could balance the unconscious liberal bias of what was termed the “mainstream media.” In the fragmented media environment that emerged after the heyday of the “big three” national TV networks, narrow but intense niche audiences provided the most reliable listeners and viewers and the highest comparative ratings. Limbaugh’s outsize talent helped spawn scores of imitators—but none as successful, and some strikingly unsuccessful. Attempts to create left-wing talk-radio corollaries proved no less offensive but far less popular, like the little-lamented Air America.
But this latest controversy comes at a particularly difficult time for right-wing talk radio. They are playing to a (sometimes literally) dying demographic. Rush & Co. rate best among old, white males. They have been steadily losing women and young listeners, who are alienated by the angry, negative, obsessive approach to political conservations. Add to that the fact that women ages 24–55 are the prize advertising demographic, and you have a perfect storm emerging after Limbaugh’s Sandra Fluke comments.
As pressure grows for advertisers and radio stations to drop Rush & Co., there will be much talk about the dangers of censorship, with allies talking about a left-wing “jihad” against Rush (language his brother David Limbaugh has already used).
But the irony is that the same market forces that right-wing talk-radio hosts champion are helping to seal their fate. Advertisers are abandoning the shows because they no longer want to be associated with the hyperpartisan—and occasionally hateful—rhetoric. They are finally drawing a line because consumers are starting to take a stand.
An additional irony: just as the technology-driven fragmentation of the landscape allowed partisan media to proliferate, a new technological development is providing the tools to take it down. Social media is making it possible to create a grassroots movement very quickly, voicing grievances very quickly and getting heard at the top of corporate headquarters.
“In the past, a letter, petition, or phone campaign took a few days to put together and longer to execute,” says Valerie Geller. “But now customers [listeners] can instantly rally using Facebook, Twitter, and instant messaging to make their displeasure with a client, product, or service known immediately. These movements can happen fast.”

i don't know if limbaugh "made" the talk show industry. i believe they were huge when i was small and growing up, anyway they were on the radio in my house...though they never sounded like the current generation of scumbaggers. (i made up the term, jwhop, and it has no sexual - homo or hetero - connotations whatsoever)

one thing they had in common, they were entertainment. music took over the airwaves for the most part as i got older, and i was away when rush hit the fan.

here's what the free market has to say about how these folk affect the free market. the piece makes it perfectly clear that these companies know how many people are reached and how much exposure they are losing. in the long run, it is not worth it. bad for business!

Limbaugh Rejects Company That Suspended Ads From Show Over Fluke Remarks
March 8, 2012
Jonathon M. Seidl

Rush Limbaugh has rejected an advertiser’s apparent attempt to reunite with his show after the company initially dropped its ads from the program following his remarks about contraception advocate Sandra Fluke.

The company, Sleep Train, calls itself “the No. 1 Bedding Specialist on the West Coast, and most recognized mattress retailer in the region.”

In an email to Sleep Train President Dale Carlsen (obtained by The Blaze), a representative of the show says that Limbaugh personally considered the company’s request, but denied it considering its public comments following the controversy.

“Thank you for your requests last week and this week to restart your voiced endorsement in local markets of The Rush Limbaugh Show,” the email begins. “Rush received your requests personally.”

“Unfortunately, your public comments were not well received by our audience, and did not accurately portray either Rush Limbaugh’s character or the intent of his remarks. Thus, we regret to inform you that Rush will be unable to endorse Sleep Train in the future.

And then, there's Carbonite!

Carbonite stock dropped 12% in 2 days after the Carbonite prez sent a snarky letter on Saturday the 3rd canceling his advertising. Do you know how many dollars in share value 12% is to a company like Carbonite? Whatever Carbonite..the company was worth on Friday the 2nd, it's was worth 12% less by Tuesday as investors in the stock sold their stock and drove the price down.

Talk about shooting yourself in the head! Carbonite was one of the biggest decliners on NASDAQ Tuesday. Funny how fast the word gets around.

Oh, and Rush was right and is right about the flake Fluke. Her little campaign is being run by the former Communications Director for...guess who?

If you said..."The worst President in US history" give yourself a gold star.

One more thing.

I understand Fluke was so distraught that O'Bomber had to call and console her.

I wonder when Sarah Palin can expect to get a call from the idiot O'Bomber after Bill Maher called her a C*NT on the air? Hey, isn't it the idiot O'Bomber who wants "civil political discourse". No, not really!

Of course, none of the commies, Socialists and Progressives ever want to talk about Maher, or Seargent Schultz or any of the other leftist jerks who routinely defame, libel and slander women.

Now, it's going to be interesting to see how much stocks of other companies which sent letters dripping with politically correct drivel drop as investors dump them too.

can't live without our hate can we? the difference between maher and limbaugh, jwhop, is that limbaugh CLAIMS to be humourous, but maher is actually funny...

yes, as mentioned in my post above, all those companies KNEW their decision would cost them...in the short run...but decided it was time to stop supporting the divisiveness limbaugh makes a living on.

hadn't heard sleep train begged for forgiveness! but you know, there are other places to advertise and ...in the LONG run...rush is bad for business. an over-zealous divided public is depressing for the country and it shows.

sandra fluke or no sandra fluke, rush insulted just about half the population the other day. and got his facts wrong in the process. one does not take daily contraceptive pills because one is having "so much sex" but because they are a "maintenance" medication that don't work if you take them just when you want to have sex, like VIAGRA, which, by the way, IS covered on most insurance policies! why is that? because men feel ENTITLED to have sex even when it may be bad for their health(or they are no longer capable on their own).

Dozens of advertisers have stopped airing ads on the nationally syndicated radio program in response to Limbaugh calling Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke a “**** ” and “prostitute” over her stance on health insurance coverage for contraception.

so a couple changed their minds. this is not even confined to rush any more. people are tired of being yelled at and told who the bogeymen are, and WOMEN are tired of being called ***** for having sexual liberty.

however i propose we try it the conservative way. from now on, legs crossed except if you are planning a baby, ladies! the ladies of the night will be only too glad of the extra business!

Why should anyone but Fluke herself pay for her own contraception so she can have recreational sex?

But, the best reason in the world exists for why Georgetown University...a Catholic institution shouldn't. The practice of chemical contraception violates the basic tenets of the Catholic religion. That belief and others held by the Catholic Church and other faiths as well are protected by the very 1st Amendment to the United States Constitution.

You should read it sometime and so should O'Bomber since he took this oath:

"I, Barack Hussein Obama do solemnly swear, that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will, to the best of my ability, preserve protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, so help me God."

BTW, Bill Maher is about as funny as a root canal operation.

This is straight from the horse's ass!
Maher admits "his audience are a bunch of brainwashed liberals".

context, please? lol. to each their own. rush thinks HE is funny..

limbaugh was not talking about religious rights. he was implying that because this woman takes the pill she must be having "SO MUCH SEX" she can't afford the contraception.

once again BC pills are not just for prevention of pregnancy. personally i have many reservations about them, but i believe one should have the right to choose.

is it within the religious boundaries for men to get viagra paid for by their insurance companies?

once again i suggest that the men who are hoohahing about this get used to their women refusing to have recreational sex...then the moderates (republican and independent alike)among them will be considering voting for obama just like the many thousands of women who have decided the republicans are trying to tell them what they can and can't do.

the wisconsin house recently introduced a bill to define single and gay-parent households as child abusers...what next? make divorce illegal? how about jailing all the single mothers out there?

this is beyond absurd.

Well, most of your posts are beyond absurd and that's for sure.

I don't give a damn how much recreational sex you, Fluke or anyone else is having. Just don't ask me to pick up the tab for your birth control pills.

Further, this is not a "woman's health" issue. It's a 1st Amendment issue and O'Bomber...our supposed Constitutional Scholar is on the wrong side of the issue and is, in fact violating the Constitution by insisting the Catholic Church include birth control in their health insurance policies.

It's not flying. And neither is the O'Bomber/Fluke collaboration to turn the issue away from the constitutional issue it really is.

Fluke knew Georgetown is a Catholic University and she knew full well that birth control and abortion are totally against the doctrines of the Catholic Church.

Fluke chose to enroll there anyway because Fluke is a political activist.

The problem with leftist political activists is that they just won't leave other people alone and insist on shoving their views down everyone's throats.

I don't give a damn what Fluke or anyone else thinks. But, when they attempt to force their opinions on others...including me...in the form of legislation, that's when they would be wise to buckle their chin straps.

okay then jwhop, then viagra has GOT to go too...can't have one without t'other! lmao.

as to forcing the church to do anything, that was walked back some time ago now. so what are you talking about???hmm?

fluke isn't forcing anything on anyone, she is not a legislator, but responded to questioning, and gave her OPINION. another heinous crime from the left aisle!! keep stretching, jwhop, it helps prevent arthritis.

Fluke is part of the reelect O'Bomber campaign.

Her handler is former O'Bomber Communications Director Anita Dunn...whose 2 main sources of worship and inspiration were.....Mother Teresa and the Communist Chairman Mao Zedong, the murderer of about 120,000,000 of his own Chinese people.

I know how inspired I am with Anita Dunn's choice of Mao!

Besides which, the O'Bomber plan to divert attention away from his violation of the 1st Amendment rights of Catholics...and others to the issue of women's health...has failed. Instead of his numbers going up, they're going down...after women...Catholics and others had a chance to think about all the places they could get free birth control pills and how cheap they are, even if they had to pay. They appreciate their 1st Amendment rights to religious freedom more than they value cheap contraception they can get just about anywhere.

It was always another phony issue to divert attention away from the utter failure of the worst President in US history.

I don't give a rat's ass about Viagra but I'll bet on the back lash against the demoscat women reps in the Ohio legislature who introduced legislation to require a man seeking Viagra to get certified by a sex therapist, a medical letter from a Cardiologist after a stress test and a notarized statement from a sex partner that they are impotent.

Let's wait and see how badly they get blown out of office next November...those who are up for relection in November.

here's some more anti-woman politicians...nothing to do with the church's rights here, is there? just plain old misogyny, blaming the woman for being beaten and suggesting that SHE should just remind herself of how in love she once was, that'll make it all better.

and single parent and gay-parent families to be defined as child abuse? oh what has pandora done!

I'm with this Rep.

Single motherhood IS the biggest factor in child abuse as well as one of the highest markers of lifelong poverty for their children.

Life is about choices and if you insist on making the wrong choices in life, then at least be man or woman enough to take full responsibility for your own choices.

you judge people by your own bent, jwhop. NO ONE has gloated over breitbart, someone just pointed out that "god" does not necessarily protect those you approve of.

whereas i remember your complacent remark about "rough justice" for the doctor who was shot in church because he practiced safe abortions for those who desperately wanted/needed them.
