Unlike things like rape and murder there is no alternatives listed for you to pick and choose from to decide which part of the Bible you wish to believe and which part you wish to ignore. In every single case homosexuality is mentioned it is soundly condemned, and it take some amazing leaps of logic (though I admit being grudgingly impressed with some revisions of the Bible I've heard by gay & gay-friendly Christians) to ignore all that so that one can fall back on the Golden Rule instead (now THERE'S a part of the Bible I wish more Christians were as passionate about...).

Though just to be clear I don't think that excuses bigotry against gays and I'm against laws based on the Bible (ie, "just because God says so") as I am laws based on the Koran. If we really lived by the Bible then we'd still practice slavery (as slavery is another issue the Bible clearly supports every time it's brought up, even Jesus uses parables of slaves without condemning the practice). And when St. Paul gives examples like these for all good Christians to follow I find I'm glad that most Christians aren't that familiar with many of the specifics of their Bible (typically having a sanitized understanding they got from Sunday School as kids and a handful of sermons per year).

I think one problem is that the US has a much shorter history and thus we don't have the musuems that Europe does to remind us how horrific life was when the Church ran things directly. Of course should the Dominionists or even many from the Christian Right ever get the power they seek then many of the Christians here at LL will be same boat as the rest of us. Historically, Christians who accepted "heathen" ways (which astrology would be counted as today) were treated even worse than actual "heathens" because they were blasphemers and heretics in addition to behaving like "heathens." And once they're in power there's no more debate allowed on what is proper Christianity.

And the vicious cruelties that Catholics & Protestants inflicted on each other was a big reason why a separation of church & state was incorporated into our Constitution as enough of the founding fathers and expats didn't want those horrors that were (then) currently going on in Europe to be repeated in America. Of course the Christian Right has tried to rewrite that even to the point of Texas dropping much about Thomas Jefferson from being taught at school because of quotes like these:
