via AP~ quote: TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A federal court says a Florida law that restricts the number of early-voting days could result in a dramatic reduction in participation by blacks. The Republican-controlled Florida legislature last year cut the number of early-voting days to 8 from 12.
The 119-page ruling did say there were ways that the state could ultimately come up with a plan to change early voting that would not adversely affect minority voting rights.
Voter suppression is a big deal in this election. Several times in this forum I have mentioned, in discussion, the number of times Voter fraud has been committed. The big number since the new millennium is TEN. So why keep so many judges- both state and federal- busy with new voter reg. laws designed to "minimized" that huge number? Having to toss out an onslaught of politically-motivated, baseless lawsuits and criminal complaints. quote: Laws or administrative practices have made it more difficult for people to register to vote. In 2011, the state of Florida imposed a short deadline for the submission of voter registration forms, with stiff penalties for late filing. The bill led to the end of voter registration work by one organization, the League of Women Voters, whose spokesperson said, "Despite the fact that the League of Women Voters is one of the nation’s most respected civic organizations, with a 91-year history of registering and educating voters, we will be unable to comply with the egregious provisions contained in [this bill]."
Disinformation about voting procedures: Voters may be given false information about when and how to vote, leading them to fail to cast valid ballots. For example, in recall elections for the Wisconsin State Senate in 2011, Americans for Prosperity (a conservative organization that was supporting Republican candidates) sent many Democratic voters a mailing that gave an incorrect deadline for absentee ballots. Voters who relied on the deadline in the mailing would have sent in their ballots too late for them to be counted. The organization said that the mistake was a typographical error. 2008 presidential election A review of states' records by The New York Times found unlawful actions leading to widespread voter purges. A dispute between the Social Security Administration commissioner and the National Association of Secretaries of State about the use of the Social Security database to test the validity of voters led to the shutdown of the database over the Columbus Day holiday weekend. Georgia Wait times of between 2 and 10 hours were reported during early voting at multiple Georgia locations Michigan Prior to the 2008 United States Presidential Election, on September 16, 2008, Obama legal counsel announced that they would be seeking an injunction to stop an alleged caging scheme in Michigan wherein the state Republican party would use home foreclosure lists to challenge voters still using their foreclosed home as a primary address at the polls. Michigan GOP officials called the suit "desperate." A Federal Appeals court ordered the reinstatement of 5,500 voters wrongly purged from the voter rolls by the State: Minnesota The conservative nonprofit Minnesota Majority has been reported as making phone calls claiming that the Minnesota Secretary of State had concerns about the validity of the voters registration. Their actions have been referred to the Ramsey County attorney's office and the U.S. Attorney are looking into Johnson's complaint. Montana On October 5, 2008 the Republican Lt. Governor of Montana, John Bohlinger, accused the Montana Republican Party of vote caging to purge 6,000 voters from three counties which trend Democratic. These purges included decorated war veterans and active duty soldiers. Ohio Wait times of six hours were reported for early voting in Franklin County leading to people leaving the line without voting. Wisconsin The Republican Party attempted to have all 60,000 voters in the heavily Democratic city of Milwaukee who had registered since 1/1/2006 deleted from the voter rolls. The requests were rejected by the Milwaukee Election Commission with Republican commissioner Bob Spindell voting in favor of deletion." Have your vote count

Hahaha Total crap. No one is inconvenienced by reducing early voting days from 12 to 8. People who want to vote will get off their lazy as$es, register to vote and haul their carcasses down to the specified buildings to vote. The exception are military personnel who may be on leave and scheduled to return to their units before the election. But, to show everyone how phony the demoscat argument really is, demoscats have filed a lawsuit in Ohio to prevent military personnel from voting early. The reason these whining, thumb sucking, screeching, howling, shriekers did that is because military personnel break heavily for Republican candidates.

regarding voter supression it is not all at the polls or in the state legislatures...during the wisconsin recall run-up people (900,ooo) of them, who had signed petitions for the recall to happen were contacted by telephone by someone who informed them that they didn't need to actually go vote, their signature made their ballot automatic...a completely false story and ploy by those who didn't want those 900K votes counted... and yet voter fraud gets the big conspiracy theory despite the miniscule evidence that it takes place. @ jwhop i'm not sure where you get off calling people you don't know lazy a$$es. when has voting ever cost you a day's pay? when was the last time a day's pay meant a few days without dinner? get over yourself. Jwhop, really? You're back to the false Ohio claim? Did you ever prove that you were right on that? No, you didn't, because you still aren't. Node IP: Logged |

In further gerrymandering news....Federal court rejects Texas voting maps, finds them discriminatory Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/08/28/federal-court-rejects-texas-voting-maps-finds-them-discriminatory/?test=latestnews#ixzz24sZxPrVq quote: Texas' argument boiled down to politics: The state's lawyers said the map crafted by the Legislature reflected a GOP majority seeking to squeeze a partisan advantage out of the once-a-decade redistricting process, not a willful disregard for the Voting Rights Act. The state also maintained that lawmakers kept a cool distance from the process, leaving much of the work of drawing districts to legislative staff. Through the trial, the three-judge panel appeared skeptical of Texas' arguments. The presiding judge, Rosemary Collyer, at one point told Texas' lawyers flatly, "It's really hard to explain (changes to the map) other than doing it on the basis of reducing minority votes."
This is a *better late than never* ruling as: "The ruling applies to the maps originally drawn by the Legislature in 2011, and not interim maps drawn by a San Antonio federal court that are to be used in the upcoming elections this November. The Washington court's Tuesday decision is most likely to impact the maps that will be used in the next election cycle in 2014."
