Steinem, NOW chapters slam DNC for ‘discrimination against mothers’ during Charlotte convention
08/21/2012
By Caroline May

Feminist activist Gloria Steinem and several chapters of the National Organization for Women (NOW) have condemned the Democratic National Committee for “discrimination against mothers with young children” during the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

“Women are the key to a Democratic victory, and sometimes, children are the key to women,” Steinem said in a statement. “It’s both right and smart for the Democratic Convention to behave as if children exist.”

The NOW chapters of Southern California — including Hollywood, Long Beach-South Bay, Pacific Shore and Palm Spring — voiced concern this week that the Democratic National Convention will not offer automatic access for young children on the convention floor, and will not be providing childcare during the event.

According to mother and 2012 Democratic National Convention delegate Susie Shannon, the policy is disenfranchising women like her.

“Moms with young children six years of age and under who cannot be left at home, some of whom are breastfeeding, are relegated to second-class status within the Democratic Convention,” she explained in a statement, “unable to participate as a delegate due to antiquated policies and inadequate accommodations that were apparently in place before women’s suffrage.”

NOW Hollywood President Lindsey Horvath charged that the policy of requiring children and babies to be credentialed is being used to discriminate against mothers.

“The DNC requires children and babies to have a credential to enter the convention, and then denies these credential requests from moms. The DNC credentialing process is being used as a tool to prevent mothers from participating at the convention and is nothing short of discriminatory.”

Convention spokeswoman Joanne Peters told the Associated Press that attendees can find childcare providers in the convention’s official vendor directory, and that facilities will be provided for nursing mothers.

“We believe this practice of discrimination needs to end in 2012,” said Pacific Shore NOW President Zoe Nicholson. “This is the year for the Democratic leadership to demonstrate comprehensive support of women, ending this outdated practice and to state publicly that it supports true family values.”

A Republican National Convention spokeswoman did not respond to TheDC’s request for child-care policies at the RNC in Tampa.

why do babies and young children want to be at a stoopid convention anyway? hasn't anyone ever heard of babysitters? people take their kids to the most inappropriate places these days, don't they?

at least the dems aren't afraid to put their policy out for public scrutiny...

None of your business and not your call to decide why mothers want to be at the demoscat convention katatonic.

But after all the yelping and lying about the republican war on women we can now see who is really short changing women.

Of course, we already knew that after pi$$ing and moaning about equal pay for women it turned out that the biggest whiners were actually the demoscats who paid women the least...and far less than men on their staffs...including the biggest whiner of them all...O'Bomber.

Everywhere you turn, there's a phony demoscat narrative.

interesting point of view, jwhop, but i don't recall any ban on me having an opinion - and as a woman i think i might have more direct interest in such a matter.

women consider the democrats to be THEIR party. so they expect special treatment from the dems.

again, the republicans don't want to even talk about their policy on this matter...probably because NOW is not trying to get IN to their convention!

That is not short-changing women. How stupid. Yeah, we NEED a bunch of young children on the convention floor. That's such "conventional" wisdom.

"We will lose what we have gained if a Republican candidate were to win...So the question is will we be active, will we get out there, will we be self-respecting and forget about party labels and vote for ourselves. Vote for our fundamental human rights?" - Gloria Steinem FOR OBAMA 2012

as i suspected, the NOW folk aren't bothered about whether they can get into the republican convention or NOT. that doesn't mean they have no complaints with the dem party or it's practical processes.

I am so surprised by the people who are afraid the Republicans are gonna take away their birth control or abortion. I see all these people on FB with all these crazy posts about keeping the Republicans out of their bedrooms.

The Republicans don't want to get in your bedroom. Abortion is law. It will not be taken away. No "right" has ever been taken away, except alcohol and that was given back. At any rate, the Republicans don't want to take away your birth control. Go to Wal Mart and get a package of condoms

so..you have not noticed the republican party platform includes the abolition of abortion? that ryan is pushing against many forms of birthcontrol, including the "morning after" pill that can prevent pregnancy from rape?

i think you are misguided if you don't think the republicans want into your bedroom. gloria steinem is no dumby, nor, as this thread points out, is she willing to take shite from the dems, but they are still the party she and NOW count on.

the republican stance AGAINST gay marriage is another "in yer bed" position...gays are citizens and it is none of the govt's business if they want to get married. it actually adds to "family values" but i think they are afraid of their socially conservative base who still see gays as freaks...

however they apparently do not care if SOME people beat their wives to a pulp in their bedrooms. protection against abuse is "interference".

do you understand, ami, how many people get pregnant using condoms? and how many have sex forced upon them and no chance to insist on condoms?
