Good Morning Handsome, I have a serious political question that I can't find an answer for and since I think you're brilliant, I just know you'll have the correct answer. In light of the "birth-er" issue and as I understand it, you must be a natural born citizen or in a zone that is under US control to become President. (isn't that what all the fuss was about, being born in the US?) I vaguely recall that Alexander Hamilton couldn't become the President because he was born in the West Indies yet he was a Founding Father...go figure (I may have failed American History here) Jump to the 1968 Presidential Election. George Romney ran against Richard Nixon for the Republican Nomination, which he lost, but had he won, and then the Presidency, wouldn't he be disqualified because he was born in Mexico? I don't get it. Jwhop IP: Logged |

Ohhhhh, look out, bomb throwing Aries girl in the building! No, you wouldn't have flunked American history or Civics because you have your facts basically right. There's just one important piece of information you need to know for George Romney's run for President to make sense to you. Both of George Romney's parents were US citizens, having been born in Utah Territory which was part of the United States. That conferred automatic "Natural Born Citizen" status on all their children where-ever they were born...including George Romney. lalalinda

lala, the birther charade rests on the fact that IF obama were born in kenya (no evidence available!) he would not be a citizen because his mother was 2 months shy of 19, the age at which HER citizenship would be conferred on foreign born children.in fact there is evidence that he was born in hawaii, which was a state, and therefore the whole thing is basically wishful thinking on the part of folk who would like to ERASE obama's presidency. the same thing was BIG controversy when romney ran...he was born in mexico...but as jwhop says, both his parents were born in utah... though utah was not a state when they were born it did become so in 1896 and i don't think the romneys would have emigrated but for US law against polygamy. at any rate the george romney citizenship was pretty solidly upheld at the time of his running. Hi Kat, so she would have to be 19 years old for her foreign born children to be American citizens? How does that make sense? Have a baby overseas when you're 18, no citizenship wait until you're 19, get American citizenship?again, go figure Thanks Kat IP: Logged |
