for the record, YTA, i don't think anyone suggested that ALL the 1% feel any one way about the issues. many of them were actually AT the OWS camps...but it is equally true that many people in the 1% were once on welfare...including most of the hostesses of the VIEW whom romney apparently is afraid to chat with.. and of course, romney's grandparents and father IP: Logged |

Kat,I have taken the time to roam amongst the OWS over the past year and mingle to hear them out. I have the choice to avoid them and view them as pesky, but believe it or not, I understand what it is to be unemployed, broke and very hungry. My kids were on state Medicaid when I was unemployed, so I get what it is to be uninsured and be on welfare as well. And I get college humor. I was a very broke college kid myself, except I worried not about $900 iPads but I was still envious of the kids with $6000 IBM PCs and $4500 Apple Laser Printers. I used an old school typewriter that I found thrown out by the sidewalk. So, I get it. I'm not here to vouch for Romney. I myself believe that he engaged in legal but aggressive tax avoidance, and the same with Trump and every other billionaire, including Soros, Gates and Buffet. Nobody wants to release anything personal such as tax records. I myself claim every possible legal charitable contribution deduction I can. Taxes are a thorn in all our sides, whether rich or poor. I'm not here to vouch that Romney connects with the average person. Multimillionaires rarely do, if ever. I got **** from my own father when I was laid off. He called me lazy and unmotivated, as though it was my choice not to work. But I type this **** on my way to work now, counting my blessings that I have my job, but nevertheless swearing through my teeth that it's flipping butt early and I rather be asleep. So I can understand a guy wanting a couple of bucks for food, but come on, it gets old when a dude wants income equalization when he doesn't even try. IP: Logged |

not arguing with that, or you for that matter...the fact is that the reason so many are getting help is because so many lost their jobs and homes. they are using that help TO GET BACK ON THEIR FEET, and the conservative love affair with the image of lazy welfare queens watching tv all day is a myth and a HOAX.sure, there are people who will scam any system, govt, corporate or even their own at times. but after hearing the statistics from the association of contractors, new builds are up along with existing-home sales, and i suspect a lot of the people who went off the unemployment rolls are working in these trades after a long slump. No. Unfortunately, the new housing builds are only further depressing the residential real estate market. Mortgage rates have sunk further, now into the low-mid 3s, but banks still refuse to lend except to the most creditworthy, which in general is the 1%. There is already an excess supply of properties, and building new residential properties is like pointing the gun at the crotch and pulling the trigger.IP: Logged |

that makes sense to me. i can't get on side with the need for constant new buildings(for both biz and ecology reasons)...out here in cali a lot of contractors have taken the initiative of revving up their RENOVATION business arm...lots of housing here was built as vacation homes, obsolete in so many ways besides insulation needs...and there are so many beautiful houses aching for touching up.but i did hear that construction is up ALONGSIDE sales of existing homes? both new builds and reconstruction are good for a slew of materials and skills businesses. i don't listen to prices because devaluation plus inflation make them so...conceptual! but activity means work means good. It's a double edge sword. New construction spurs the home building materials industry. It may even drive retail like Home Depot and Lowes. It supports construction. However, the drop in property values also drives down local town tax revenues. It of course kills the re-fi and appraisal industries, but the banks murder themselves with tough credit standards anyway. But it sinks the velocity of home sales, which sinks the home relocation industries, trucking and shipping, and a whole bunch of service industries including retail home brokerage and corporate relocation, HR services etc.IP: Logged |

Jon Stewart was especially brilliant here, IMO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=km4BfW2836Y Though he missed where Romney used corporate welfare himself. IP: Logged |
