Chik Filet supported Focus on the Family which is a pro family group. There was no hate speech etc.
The owner has Biblical values. That is it. I guess he is not allowed to have Biblical values and talk about them in the US.

Do you know how scary that is?

Here Kat:
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/chick-fil-funding-anti-gay-groups-175154249.html

Admittedly, like the fifth thing that popped up in a simple search.

*ETA*

This is their choice (if it's true) to pull out of funding these organizations. Just as it is somebody's choice not to eat there if they disagree with their beliefs. This was not "forced" upon them.

thanks, ghani, it is nice to know what people are starting threads ABOUT.

"We are very much supportive of the family—the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

oh that freedom, the freedom to misinterpret the bible regarding marriage...you know, the bible where men had several wives, and it was recommended that an unfaithful wife be stoned...?

however i heard, quietly on the side, that the real reason chik filet were not getting their permits was due to EMPLOYMENT policies, not their support of groups that seek to prevent gays from living like other people..

I always do laugh at the way "interpretations" are taken by some to be "fact".

Thought it was just me!

They stopped giving money to people whom they valued like Focus on the Family, which is a great group.

It is bad for all you liberals who think it is good. I value free speech so much I don't care if Nazis, or anyone, talks trash about me.

Free speech must be protected or we all fall. God help us

Honestly, I don't know what you are talking about, Ami. I don't see how this is so connected to "free speech" in your eyes. Diversionary tactic?

Reading this article, it appears that Chick Fil A is standing by its morals, its original ststements, but as a business move, not openly discriminating against employees based on race, orientation, etc. The corporation itself didn't comment except to state their beliefs already released in July.

Again, this is their choice.

We can be free in our speech without being complete a$$holes. One of the virtues, no?

as i mentioned, ami, chick-fil a were also guilty of discrimination against gay employees, with at least a dozen suits against them way before the flak hit the stands...

and the whole brouhah about them being picked on for supporting that family group (who insist that marriage is defined in the bible but don't appear too familiar with marriages described in the bible) who are trying to keep gay people from imagining they are "just people like everyone else" (heresy, right?) was a public relations diversion to make the municipalities look heavy handed and dictatorial.

I believe in free speech. And I even grudgingly allow Westboro Baptist (hey, maybe they eat at CFA, too!), NAMBLA, and the KKK (more CFA supporters) their right to free speech. Do you? Especially as unlike the groups CFA supported they don't really have a chance at inflicting harm on more than a handful of fellow citizens.

Are you a member of the ACLU? If not, why not?

And if you believe we have a right to free speech then why would you deny a minority the free right to enter into a civil marriage contract? Why would you hurt families simply because your religion (at least your version of it) doesn't like it? Why would you deny lifetime lovers the right to be by their bedside in the hospital? Is it because you believe that people can say whatever they want as long as they live in submission to your particular religious views? And if you think our lives must be in accordance to your religion (no matter what our own religion happens to be), then why don't you believe our speech should also be curtailed in addition to our other liberties?

Of course CFA also gave money to groups like Exodus International, groups that not only fight against gays being included on hate crime bills in the USA (but not against hate crime legislation itself) and even justified murder of homosexuals (ok, if we're gonna split hairs over it, they more blamed the victim than the murderer), and most of all they were instrumental in getting "kill the gays" bills passed in Africa by bearing false witness and funding such laws. Now THAT'S Nazi like (Nazis didn't like gays either and had them wear pink triangles when sent to the camps, btw). Do you support their contribution to that? Do you willingly hand over your money knowing it will go to contributing to murder and oppression (even if you believe it will only be in backward places like Africa)?

And think back to the arena in Ancient Rome. Sometimes the audience got to decide whether the victim got to live or die with a thumbs up or thumbs down. Are those who gave a thumbs down guilty of murder if the victim dies as a result? And if so, aren't you guilty of murder by giving CFA the thumbs up with your money to be given to the groups dedicated to the killing of homosexuals? And who was guilty of Christ being crucified, the Romans who did it or the religious leaders that demanded it? If the religious leaders share in the blame, then why wouldn't you share in the blame of what's going on in Africa now, thanks in part to CFA?

Here's me exercising my freedom of speech:

There are far better organizations out there to support who actually relieve suffering instead of causing it. Examples include Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, and RAINN. Choosing to instead give money to groups like Exodus International is not righteous, it's evil. I define "good" as helping people, as the 3 examples I gave do. I define "evil" as trying to harm others as groups like Exodus International do in the name of God. It's evil when Muslims do it, evil when Nazis do it, and evil when Christians do it, no matter how moral and righteous they all feel as they do it (and any good they do on the side doesn't make up for it, especially when they deny gays or Jews the benefits of said charities as Christians, Muslims, and Nazis have all done to both at one time or another).

And just out of curiosity Ami, have you volunteered or donated to a group that has helped others? Or do you just give your money to CFA to support groups that inflict suffering on the innocent?

Free Speech:
You're free to speak and people are free to react.

The government, however, may not take action unless your speech poses the risk of imminent harm or violence.

Please don't confuse how the government may act with how people may react.

Well, Ram Emmanuel called for a boycott of Chik Filet and no one did anyone to censure him. He is a mayor of a city.

Here is the thing. People may think Christians are ignorant idiots, in that they believe the Bible literally( Born Again Christians, anyway)

I am not taking issue with this. That is your freedom. However, know this, if the Christians freedom( of anything) is threatened, YOURS is next.

That is what that old poem was about. They came for the Jews and I did nothing, as I was not a Jew. They came for the Catholics and I did nothing because I was not a Catholic etc

I, as a Born Again Christian am for the freedoms of everyone, as I know therein lies my own freedom

one MORE TIME

CHIK FIL A WERE GUILTY OF DISCRIMINATION IN HIRING AND TREATMENT OF EMPLOYEES FOR GENDER AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION REASONS>

it was not their support of hate groups that got them in hot water.

rahm emanuel has as much right to his opinion as they do. however they were NOT persecuted for their beliefs but their PRACTICES IN THE WORKPLACE.

how many people do you think care if emanuel suggests a boycott? just because the mayor says so is not making it law. the licenses they had trouble with were about their company policies not their belief in the SO CALLED BIBLICAL definition of marriage.

as i mentioned, in the bible we see polygamy (for men only), stoning of wives who misbehaved, etc etc. is this what you support as "traditional, biblical" marriage?????

People have been silenced for a long while now. Bloggers and independent reporters who have exposed corporate misconduct have come under FBI scrutiny and even Food Not Bombs have been arrested as "food terrorists" for feeding the homeless in parks. Protestors have endured all sorts of abuse and both their message and subsequent abuse has been frequently ignored by the mainstream media (btw, that includes FOX). Welcome to the USSA.

But I find myself morbidly fascinated that you care about everyone's freedoms yet at the same time (and at the very least) wish to turn a minority into 2nd class citizens. That's not freedom. And if they can be turned into 2nd class citizens, what might happen to them next? Who might be next to be marginalized?

You are looking in the wrong place for culprits. I do not believe Chik-Filet discriminated against anyone. They hired and served gays. People can bring law suits about anything. The lawsuits being brought means nothing.
Chik Filet hired and served gay people, as they did everyone.
The owners of Chik Filet should have the same freedoms as everyone. That is what people are missing, but it is useless to try to get people to see what they won't see.

thing is, ami, they do have the same rights as everyone. as long as they are not discriminating in treatment of employees, they can SAY what they like. however supporting groups that seek to marginalize whole sections of the population, to tell them they are not able to do what the rest of us do? that is impingeing on others' freedom of expression.

meanwhile, as you yourself said, chik fil a pulled their support of these groups of their own accord. they were tooting their horn about how family values meant more to them than business, but apparently they came to understand that a lot of their business is from gays and people who think gays are entitled to equal rights under the constitution.

i believe it was customer outrage, despite the big swarm of support initially, that swayed them more than any threat of not receiving their licenses...

because in the end, their business is more important than their hatred of gays.

that is a good outcome.

unlike in russia, where two musicians were recently sentenced to hard labour camps for protesting against putin..

I could sue you right now for discriminating against me. The lawsuits mean nothing. Most Christians mind their own business and don't bother people. I am sure this man did not discriminate against gays in the workplace. That is ridiculous, really.

Unless, of course, you're not a Christian.

Agree absolutely. However, CFA isn't just talking, they're actively supporting the harm of other people which at the very least is depriving others of their freedom. It's the golden rule, if CFA wants to be left alone then they need to leave others alone. And the Golden Rule is not that hard of a concept. Live and let live, and measure CFA by the same standards as everyone else. It's not hard to miss unless you work really hard not to see it and the double standard being used.

That said, unless it can be proven they actually discriminated as opposed to said some hateful things and support groups trying to oppress others then I do think the government should leave them alone. Of course I would urge people not to support them with their patronage if they contribute to hate groups, and it would be the same if they contributed to the KKK or the Nation of Islam (which, btw, also hates gays and has some similar ideas as Exodus International on how to deal with them). Especially when there are so many other worthy causes to support, causes that HELP people rather than hurt them for being different (and for LOVE on top of that).

This gay rights thing is crazy. Gays have rights. They have rights as citizens. In fact, they have uber rights because they bully people like Chick-Filet, but I don't expect you to understand Pixie. There is a brain washing of people. I see it on FB. That is the true 47%. They are brainwashed sheeple. I hate to say it that way, but Truth is Love.

I know it will fall on deaf ears, as it will on the FB people who think they are so "new age" and more exalted than "ignorant" people.

It is hopeless to most of you. Some will see it, but most will not.

Gays are second class citizens. I know some people are too brainwashed to see it.

I'd back it up with several links but I know it would be a waste of my time.

We are on the verge of LOSING our country. Gays are the same as everyone else. The second class citizen stuff is BS. They have the rights of everyone.

I have a gay friend I love. I don't care that he is gay. He is himself. Drop all this Gay rights BS or NO ONE will have any freedom and that includes speech.

That is what is at stake with O'Bomber while all you sheeple sleep

ami, i agree that the statements of some of the mayors involved are overbearing. however it is perfectly legit to stall licensing a company that has had discrimination suits against it, at least until investigating the evidence and or outcomes of those suits.

one was brought by a muslim manager of a branch who was fired the day after he declined to participate in a group (christian) prayer meeting at work.

the suit was "settled"...haven't found out in what way yet, but settled means the suer is paid off 99% of the time.

but your title says it all. chik fil a backed off of its own accord, and thereby negated their claim that their VALUES WERE MORE IMPORTANT THAN THEIR PROFITS.

despite the huge media coverage of the outrage and "show of support", there was only a little murmur about the counter-demonstrations staged by gays who were so disgusting as to openly kiss IN FRONT of the restaurant and exercised THEIR FREE SPEECH in demonstrating their offense at chik fil a's support of ANTI GAY GROUPS.

the traditional BIBLICAL view of marriage, i repeat, includes multiple wives, the power of the husband to STONE an unfaithful or disrespectful wife, and on and on and on.

is that YOUR idea of family values?
