or any close relatives at all

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) responded to criticism of an email she sent describing her brother David, who counts on Social Security for income, saying "not everyone has a sister who can help."

The email, which was sent on Wednesday, was a response to President Barack Obama's plan to cut Social Security benefits. Warren said she was "shocked to hear" of Obama's plan before describing how her brother David lives on the $13,200 per year he receives in Social Security benefits.

A reporter from Boston's FOX 25 questioned Warren on the email, asking the senator why she didn't help her brother.

"I do help him. This is a question about how much," Warren said. "He was worked for 40 years and paid into this system and that's all the money he has to live on. And there are literally millions of people around the country for whom that is the case."

Warren also emphasized that the email was not just about her brother, but about all Americans who rely on Social Security benefits to get by.

"Let's be clear about this. Not everyone has a sister who can help," Warren said. "This is about people who work all their lives and all they've got at the end is their social security."

i have a sister who is 72...having worked hard all her life, raised two kids on her own and saved saved saved, she owns her home (condo but still home!) and relies on SS and medicare to keep her going despite what she put aside.

she has been a guinea pig in two trials of interferon treatment for Hepatitis C (second one worked!) and had treatment for two cancerous tumours in the past two years. without medicare and the knowledge that her home is covered, she would be one of the sob stories we hear daily.

many were not so fortunate, or perhaps because they were MORE fortunate they did not organize their finances so well.

Social Security is not part of the deficit problem.

I like this quote:

quote:
...the quickest, easiest way to fix any alleged problems with social security and medi-care would be to require all politicians, city, county, state and federal to retire SOLELY on SS and Medi-Care

if this was done, the govt would suddenly have Social Security and Medi-Care programs that the world would be envious of....

Just saw your post kat.

I am sorry to hear about your sister.

My mother relies solely on S.S. and my financial help to pay the bills. She once had a nest egg; investments with a co that was bought out. The mini recession and 06-07 near wiped her out.

Nothing to be sorry about...she is one of those who is benefitting from the safety net...and she earned every penny she gets. I will probably never see a dime for all i contributed to the uk ss, but i did get great healthcare while there, so no gripe. However many people who have been living high off the hog will have little to fall back on and it seems to hit those people hardest...like the woman whose article i linked on the taxes thread... Sorry you have that burden and hope i will never need to lean on my kids...

Fight your best fight to protect Social Security.

The Americans who have been working hard since 1960s and 70s were underpaid to the order of 300-400% considering inflation adjustment and prosperity given to the Corporations who used the profits of 1960s and 1970s labor to become Multi National Trillion dollar Conglomerates.

Every retired American worker deserves no less than $18,000 per year as Social Security if a fair analysis of their contribution is considered.
