I've been fighting with G.U. syndrome for quite awhile now. There never seems to be a shortage of people that could be smarter or better informed, but it doesn't really serve any purpose engaging with them. I'm sure we all recognize that on some level... and yet it doesn't take much to be sucked back in.

i first got sucked in because i had never actually come face to face with someone like jwhop, who spouted all the talking points of the most ridiculous talk show hosts (limbaugh, hannity, savage, and the nauseatingly whiny levin..etc) and i couldn't believe anyone actually believed that stuff!

i felt it was important to point out, at least to others, how bad the reasoning was and how scurrilous the sources.

but jwhop, at least, had the grace to get tired of it. i mean the same old arguments over and over for 10 years? fixed is one thing, but that kind of stubborness is more like living fossilization. i respect him for leaving.

it would be nice to be able to just talk about these things but i have come to the conclusion it "can't happen here"...

(often when in gu i wish i were frank zappa!)

lately it has become bizarre beyond words, so no other quotes!

Lord knows I could be smarter or better informed...

On point, if others would simply NOT bite the tripe baited hook , problem solved. Lately, those responding to nonsense then complaining it is nonsense are getting as tedious.

"There are four types of men in this world:

1. The man who knows, and knows that he knows; he is wise, so consult him.

2. The man who knows, but doesn't know that he knows; help him not forget what he knows.

3. The man who knows not, and knows that he knows not; teach him.

4. Finally, there is the man who knows not but pretends that he knows; he is a fool, so avoid him."

Gabirol, Ibn

Martin Niemöller

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

yes, first limbaugh, beck et al single out the socialists
then the trade unions
then the immigrants
then the disabled/poverty stricken

striking corrollations there, yet you, ami, use it to finger those who DON"T target these groups. good use of a brain!

God is not, but on the EARTH, all it takes for evil to thrive is for good people to do nothing.

The corollary to this is that in these current times, people will call good evil and evil good. Another quote

true ami, in these times it is the muslims who are being scapegoated for all our problems. and the people baying for their blood think they are doing the "good" thing.

we have had far more white american terrorists, even recently, than muslims. terrorism is terrorism and the perps should be dealt with without the need to stigmatise a whole population.

I'm in a Vonnegut-y mood:

"She was a fool, and so am I, and so is anyone who thinks he sees what God is doing."

"There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too."

"So it goes."

I find it amusing that this has turned into a "GU thread"

The belief that there is only one truth and that oneself is in possession of it seems to me the deepest root of all evil that is in the world.
