Bread & circuses have long been part of our culture, and I recently came across this comic: Done in 1993 it still remains relevant, and I can see a lot of reasons that are possible for why this is so, and perhaps always has been (at least once we had nation states). It still gets remarked on today, such as in South Park's Obama Wins! (WARNING: South Park...though IIRC it's not as profane or in the toilet as their usual eps), though SP is more about exploiting it for a laugh than pointing it out (though the C&H comic I shared did make me think of it again). And in that spirit let me say that I think Calvin & Hobbes is one of the most brilliant comics ever made. Actually, there's more truth to a lot of C&H, more than the typical political debate or speech (I did a game once of listening to Newt Gingrich talk nonstop for 17 minutes before I lost patience for it and in that time I failed to find even ONE thing he clearly stated as I'd been challenged to do). And I also would dispute Cartman's claim that people who voted took the time to carefully weigh the issues and candidates before voting, though he'd get the most he could like that by stealing the swing votes. Still, it was good for a laugh, IMO. IDK why, but the scene where Obama has been announced the winner followed by baby Ike crying makes me laugh every time. IP: Logged |

And while I'm at it, here's SP (again, it's South Park) doing a brief song on voting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hGFrvevXHM The Simpsons summed it up themselves once, too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfvvYuO6zHM George Carlin summed it up good, too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAFd4FdbJxs And I'm sure some have seen this girl tired of the 2012 elections back when it was going on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArY6-1d7upI Hey, can't say I blame her, and think if she knew how pointless it pretty much was on top of it. Strange how much more accurate the comedic political discussions are than the standard fare of the MSM.Calvin & Hobbes Bill Watterson was a Cancer with either an Aqua or Pisces moon (either would fit, I think)...looks like his NN-Neptune is conjunct your sun, Pixie Sextile his Leo Mercury. He has a splash chart, which makes me proud, because I have one too. But I can't draw like that. IP: Logged |
