Actually, I was right about everything I said. And Ami was correct in saying so. The only thing at issue was the difference in status (it being a (c)(4) they applied for instead). Ami's organization was a (C)(3), and in that vein she was correct in her experience and relating it to what I said here with her comment. My flaw was in overlooking the political involvement prohibition in the (C)(3).IP: Logged |

With regard to what the IRS did...Organizations seeking tax exempt status from the IRS --the ones that didn't realize that they could self-declare-- got handled with impropriety based on partisanship. Some people at the IRS decided that they should get these organizations to really nail down the basis of their tax exempt status under the law. (That is what a 501(c)(4) organization should do anyway if they don't wish to have their tax exempt status revoked.) It was due to the dialogue between the organization and the IRS that things were found to be unequal. It's like the Tea Party organizations were like mom-and-pop do-it-yourselfers, and because they were doing it themselves they didn't have the lawyers to consult and all that. An organization with money, like Stephen Colbert's, just hired a lawyer from the start to ensure things went smoothly. Because the mom-and-pop Tea Partiers didn't know what they were doing, the IRS gave them every last detail of what they should do to obtain tax exempt status under the law. They thought that was excessive, and they were probably right. If they had had a lawyer, the lawyer could have attended to the detail, and ensured the organization was on the right path. It seems to me like Conservative organizations were treated as if they were basically incompetent. Whereas there was trust in more liberal sounding organizations that they knew what they were doing. The IRS screwed up in not treating all parties the same. IP: Logged |
