A few weeks ago, I had an epiphany that I only shared with Charmaine and my close family and friends. To make a long story short, I decided to go to law school. I am starting Graduate school this year, so I will finish that year out (which will give me time to apply for law schools and study for the LSAT), but upon pondering the type of law I want to practice, I realized to my surprise that although my political leanings are conservative, my law practice will be quite liberal! I will be taking cases where often the client won't be able to afford my fee. But they will be cases where I will be able to defend the weak from being taken advantage of by employers, the government, or other entities. That's a very liberal approach. I hope to help a lot of people who otherwise would have suffered said inequities in silence. I feel like I have been drifting aimlessly most of my life, even though I have been helping others in several ways such as business and real estate consulting, being a mentor, helping people save their homes from foreclosure, helping people fight debt collectors who break the law, and other associated areas, but my hands have always been tied as to how far I can go to assist. As an attorney, I finally feel like I have found my purpose. It's a long journey to get there, but as the saying goes: "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time."

I know of a company right now that doesn't pay overtime. It's the local IHOP franchise (several locations). Paychecks are issued evey two weeks. They will schedule an employee 20 hours one week and then 60 the next. They seem to think that since the employees get 80 hours total in two weeks that it's okay not to pay them overtime. The thing is that the labor laws are based on the hours worked in a week. The best way to teach these people a lesson is to hit them in their pocketbook.

I've already come up with a tv commercial. It's great. Very funny yet impacting. No one will forget it. I've decided that I won't have an office. When I get a client, I will just come to them.

I took the MAT and scored high. It is a test of analogies. Plus, I seem to be very legal-minded by nature, so hopefully the LSAT won't intimidate me.

Do keep your eye and heart out for the elderly. Our forgotton people on a limited income needing services they can`t afford.

I volunteer my time to the elderly and am shocked by their needs and neglect.

So often it is an attorney they need and the cost prohibits them. I am learning to help do dyi wills and such. They need more people like you so badly!!

Kudos

Randall,

You realize that DineEquity is a the corporation that is the Franchisor of IHOP restaurants, and 99% of the 1,500 franchised restaurants are independently owned? Essentially, what you consider the evil corporation is insulated from whatever employee legal action you plan on taking. You will be socking it to the local mom and pop franchise owner. Is that your intended mission? To bring down a small business owner?

There's zero doubt where I stand. Go after those who don't abide by the law. But you are taking out your frustrations on a small business owner. And if it is the big corporation you are after, they have abundant resources and they will wear you down simply with time and money.

There's no rule that conservatives must be against helping the less fortunate, the primary characteristic of both the compassionate & callous conservative both is that the government shouldn't FORCE people to serve them (that is, to be "truly liberal" in the sense as the term is used in the USA then you'd have to want the government to tax others to pay your fees rather than you waive the fees for yourself other than what you can get from private, and presumably just, litigation). And while rare, there are notable conservatives (they tend to identify as Libertarian) that are leery of any centralized power, be it governmental or economic (but don't become "liberals" in the USA sense because that distrust of centralized authority also prevents them from embracing changes imposed by a centralized government and therefore prefer solutions that involves individuals on a mass scale, the "invisible hand" and such).

You might find this interesting:
http://www.politicalcompass.org/analysis2

You can take the test here if you like:
http://www.politicalcompass.org/test

And if you're curious, here were my results:

Hmm...I seem to be a less Leftist than the last time I took this test, I wonder what I answered differently this time?

And just for fun, here's an educational rap vid (and possible college project) that explained the difference between Keynesian (who was actually pretty conservative in a more authoritarian sense) & Hayek (especially loved by Libertarians):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTQnarzmTOc

Though it's more fun if you know about them (for example, Hayek wrote The Road to Serfdom that argued that collectivization of any kind was inherently destructive to society, and thus the comment about "taking a detour down the road to serfdom")

Yes, I know--it's a very wealthy local franchise owner with several locations, and he deserves what he gets for breaking the labor laws. He has done this for years and cheated/bilked his employees out of millions. I do not feel sorry for him. Keep in mind that this is money that was rightfully earned by his employees. He is not entitled to that money.

I'm not afraid of big corporations. The thing about the law is that it is often black and white. It is no respecter of persons. The big ones usually don't fight if you get them dead to rights. They don't want the negative publicity. They settle.

I guess I'm politically conservative but somewhat socially liberal.

Since I now know IRS approval isn't required, I also decided to form a nonprofit that people can donate to for court costs and expert witnesses. My work may be free, but other legal fees can add up.

If that's the case, watch the debacle that's unfolding. USA vs SAC Advisors. I predict that Uncle Sam is going to get his azz spanked.

Yes, large corporations tend to settle. But more than a couple have let the lawyers take them to court and positive tear down the attorney till he gets financially ruined.

Any cases I take will be obvious miscarriages of justice (to right wrongs). So, with clear-cut evidence of wrongdoing, I'm not worried about ever losing, although it's possible.

Sometimes losing is actually winning. Bringing injustices to light and the mass`s can continue to fight for justice on a wider scale!

That's true! Which is why they usually settle instead of risking publicity by actually going to court.

This is a long-term goal, but I'm not afraid of hard work, and I finally feel like my life is on course. It will be great to be able to do something about the wrongs I witness and make a difference.

MoonWitch, I'm practically your double! Though I guess PJ and I are tied for being anti-authoritarian.

My result:

Some of these questions annoyed me. I don't like multiple choice questions that have assumptions worked into them, or that I can't answer in any way that reflects my opinion.
