I wouldn't want to rule the world but I am very curious what people here would do to eradicate corruption and hierarchies established over centuries to improve the way this country (or any) is run.

It seems a consensus believes it is easy to do so with integrity, but, given the process and checks and balances, how?

I wouldn't want to rule it either. Sheesh, imagine a One World Government with a single person at the helm!

Holy crud that would be scary.

The title is an old Sinatra song. I don't envision a one world government let alone a sole ruler.

But many seem to think that being President is like being an absolute monarch. If you were to stretch your imagination and even humor me, how would you be an effective President?

Ideas to consider: you can't enact any actual laws or hire dept heads or judges without Congress cooperation. Kennedy had this problem and a lot of his successes were actually achieved through the political clout of his VP. Obama has this problem too. As did GW for a lot of his term.

Yet we say the president is the problem if things don't go our way, going so far as to forget all the different interests vying for place and preference.

So I am curious how anyone here would achieve their goals for the country (or anysimilar country) given the very strict limits on actual power and the very real threats involved in crossing the powers thst be?

Here we go again.

Being President of this country is like being President of some slimy corporation like Goldman Sachs or something. You have to go into the job with your EYES WIDE OPEN. As President of this country, you would already know what's expected of you from the powers that be, and what the danger would be in opposing them, right from the beginning of your first term.

If the position were forced on me, I would call for a live press conference, expose as many destructive lies as I could, and let the jerks come for me.

Kennedy was a good man. He was honorable at the expense of his life. Obama is a non-stop liar. I have no interest in making excuses for him, I have no interest in this fairy tale myth that behind it all, he actually means to fulfil his campaign promises. Please, give me a BREAK! I could tell, plain as day, that he would be nothing but a suck-up to the Establishment from day one, that's why I didn't vote for him. His deceit was obvious if you knew where to look.

I wish you would stop insisting that we consider what a tight spot he's in. I flat-out have no interest in it. It's like you are proselytizing about Jesus, only it's Obama. I agree with the comment that Randall made that prompted you to leave before: you act like you have a school girl crush on the President.

Which is fine...hey, I have a crush on Ron Paul!...but I don't make defending RP my whole M.O. I'm not asking anyone here to reconsider Ron Paul. It would be annoying if I constantly took that angle, when I know that no one else here actually wants to hear it.

Also, if you want everyone to send some love to Obama ("he can't help it") why not send that love to every other politician? That's what I REALLY don't get, how you can pretend there is some objective character difference between one puppet and another.

Wow. So you would get elected just to sacrifice yourself on the altar of truth? How noble.

Kennedy was a good man, yes...but did you even look @ the Chomsky piece I posted? He wasn't honest enough to say "I am going after the crooks, robbers and murderers who swung the election for me"..did he? Nor was he immune to the military power garbage that has been practiced by every President since, at least, Wilson.

I ask questions of those that see Obama (and others) more as cardboard devils and angels - they tend to be more complex than that, and I really don't think any of us really know what is going on in their heads.

But apparently you do, so you see my prodding as hero worship because you don't seem to have any middle ground or leeway in the ideas you have decided are better than the line you used to buy?

For the record, I don't trust any politicisn, not Obama or Kennedy either. They are none of them completely good, bad, honest or in control!

Also for the record I suspect your presidency would be very short and achieve nothing but replacement..and a lot of disillusioned, depressed citizens.

This post was not to defend Obama but to see what you would do for the country from that position. Thanks for turning it into a speech attempting to belittle me...or more correctly, your total misconception of my position!

Cat!

I'm not sure what I would do either.

On the one hand, I think some people think it simply requires a great negotiator. I think that could be true sometimes, but not when there are people present whose sole intent is to be stubborn.

That's the thing. Some people go to Congress to try to help. Those are the ones that might be open to negotiation. Other people go to Congress to try to play politics. Those are the ones that think they're tearing down the other party when they act uncooperative.

Likewise, constituents are divided. Some want a President who will put party aside for the greater good, while others want the President to deliver the death blow to the other party.

We've seen both in Obama. With some things, like Obamacare, he's repeatedly stated an openness to making the bill more perfect. On the other hand, he's not been afraid to get into a stand-off with the "do nothing" Congress when it appears Congress will bear the brunt of the political fallout. Obama's also taken the lead in exploiting technology to political ends. His campaign created the best system to date to keep track of who's interested in helping the President. Republicans are investing a lot to catch up.

@ Faith

Your remarks about what caused me to leave are way off base and a good illustration of what I'm trying to get at here. Fir the record as I recall that remark was made by Randall in a different thread but it doesn't matter WHAT he said. I left for several reasons but what reallt frustrated me that moment was that somwone had time to repeatedly assert that I had said something ut begged lack of time when I asked him to go back and point out where. However it was just a "last straw" situation after months of arguments that seemed ti go nowhere with no purpose except to assume "rightness".

Also, as I've already said, I got tired of the name katatonic long ago.

And I think the remarls made by a certain member who always claims to be "gentle" - when I wasn't here to defend myself - might point to another reason I chose to walk away.

The fact that you have erroneously explained to yourself why I, whom you have at least conversed with, do what I do, might show you how little you REALLY KNOE what Obama - or any public figure - THINKS.

That is sloppy thinking ased not on eviden,e but your own preconceptions.

Sorry bout the smartphone typos!

I left for my own reasons not because of anyTHING that was said. Assuming we know what others are thinking tends to make for pointless conversations.

Everybody loves LL, Cata.

I have seen all sorts of people sneak back on here as different people just to be part of this great vibe which is LL.

I am not saying that you did this, but Welcome Back
