Meanwhile a large group of Rabbis and jewish leaders have petitioned to hurry up and strike. Everyone's got something to say, eh?

I got the story off the front page news, Ami, and when I get to a computer later I will give you the link. I decided not to mention it yesterday but I salute the pope for calling for an outbrrak of peace, even though this is standard papal practice and not aimed @ anyone in particular, despite your headline slant.

Putin repeatedly refused in the past to consider a diplomatic solution to Syria's ongoing chaos. Isn't it interesting that it takes Obama talking tough to interest people in that diplomacy now?

Takes a bigger person to be willing to look like the bad guy to bring people to the table, doncha think?

Actually Putin had repeatedly called for a diplomatic solution. Acknowledging that when one side just wants to shoot, the other side also has a right to shoot back if it wants to stay alive, doesn't mean he wanted no diplomatic solution.

Love or Hate the Russians, (and with the iron wall in East Europe to protect themselves from everyone from Napoleon to Hitler, but at the expense of East Europeans...well no comment)
but let's not forget the biggest losses in world war 2, were the amount of Soviets who died; more than 20 Million lives, mixed civilian and army...so makes sense why he is worried that his country may get dragged into this one, as it won't be like Iraq, or Afghanistan, this is an indirect attack on the Iranians, who have two things Iraq's "leader" at the time didn't have....brains(at least with this new president) and a real army.
Very telling also last week when Kerry named a few countries and said they are the one's paying and pushing the US into this, this time.

As for the Pope finally someone on the Vatican with a real heart, and some guts, do hope it ends peacefully, even though it won't.

Beg pardon, not how I remembered it NoRain...but it's quite possible you are right. I'll have to look.

Most recently Putin has agreed that if Assad was shown to be the perpetrator he would join in the strike.

As to the "weird Jews" they are not weird at all.

And yes, many Russians lost their lives in WWII, also many millions lost their lives at the hands of their fearless leader Stalin, and Putin himself has gassed Chechens and jailed many of his own people for merely criticising his good self and government. So I really don't think that the fact he is standing back now on Syria is because he is afraid of WWIII but might have more to do with the fact that Syria is his ally and very important in Russia's oil trade.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/g8/10 126491/G8-Barack-Obama-and-Vladimir-Putin-grim-faced-on-Syria-disagreements.html
http://www.rferl.org/content/russia-united-states-obama-putin-/25020008.html http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/putin-plays-cat-and-mou se-with-obama-in-st-petersburg-a-920587.html

These two pieces discuss both leaders looking for diplomatic solutions..not finding anything indicating Putin being the instigator on that approach, but that both parties were more inclined to diplomacy than weaponry as recently as June. With Putin being upset at American aid to rebels, though he has aided Assad equally.

It's a mess any way you look at it and again, I'm glad the Church has come out for peace as they always do

And disagree with the Jewish contingent calling for military action in this case.

In fact I find it very ironic how many people here who fear that Obama will put them in concentration camps at some indefinite future point, PREFER PUTIN, who has been seen to jail dissidents with total ease and has USED CHEMICAL WEAPONS on people under his own "jurisdiction" in Chechnya.

What is obvious to me is that the US has meddled in Middle East affairs far too much for far too long and it is time we stopped.

However we are not the only bad guys on the block and I don't think Putin's motives are any holier than Obama's. People talk about Obama as if he will morph at any moment into the Antichrist but Putin is far the more despotic ruler in FACT.

Obama is a boy on the stage on men. You may not like Putin but you respect him.

Obama has no respect from anyone except the low information voter

However, Obama must be the man for the times to bring down the US.

That is his role. What else has he done

All the sides are lining up. This is a pre-play of things to come.

You may respect Putin all you want, Ami, but he is already what you fear Obama might be. Your hatred of Obama has you so bent you would prefer Hitler at this point. Now THERE was a leader with STRENGTH, right?

And I realize you are looking forward to the play-out of your doom and gloom scenario, but some of us have other ideas. It doesn't have to be like that, but you insist on buying into it.

Yes, you do seem to prefer those who shout down or threaten to clobber others to actual discussion. In fact if this were anyone else as President you would be admiring the tough guy talk. Funny that.

The fact is this could have been avoided if a) Putin hadn't supplied Assad w chemical weapons in the first place and b) we hadn't involved ourselves in someone else's civil war.

It could be argued that a years' long drought in Syria caused the uprisings and humanitarian aid (food & water) could have ended it where it began.

Still avoiding the awkward fact of the Jewish contingent's petition by trying to deflect the argument onto personal insults, Ami?

Much as I despise the Catholic church I am pleased that the Pope spoke out. However every pope in memory has made pretty much the same plea to American presidents meddling in the Middle East. That a number of spokesmen for the Jews have come out in FAVOR of military action is scary. Hopefully there will be a rebuttal from other members of their community.

Putin may have been insisting on a diplomatic solution in the past, but today, after Kerry suggested it, the Russians have actually come up with a practical solution that would involve no bombing or bloodshed.

I wonder what made the difference?

How swwweet of you to encourage me Ami! I didn't know you cared.

I go on other forums(fora) when I feel like it. "Unlike some people here" I don't have much patience for sitting indoors. My tree has many branches, but they are not all here, alas.
