That is called executing the law as it is written. The Memorial is one of the casualties of the shutdown. As Executive branch, execution is the job description. Congress makes the legislation that the executive must follow.

And Congress chose to try once again to pass a bill that would shut down the govt, because the Senate did not have time to debate and vote on it AGAIN.

Now, had they asked to delay the fines for not following the mandate, that might have got through, since apparently the fine enforcement structure is not in place anyway. If Randall is correct and the Act is technically voluntary compliance, what are they shutting the gov down FOR? To make a point and to say "nyanyanyah", essentially.

Political terrorism by a small faction of the legislative branch "because we can".

I would be willing to bet they are AFRAID to find out how many people will sign up even if they know there is no fine to beat them with.

It's not about fines. It's about delaying the individual mandate altogether. Just like the big business special interests that Obama waived the mandate for.

The mandate is gutless without fines...people will still sign up in droves in order to cover their preexisting conditions and abolish lifetime caps. Many people went to their state exchanges even before the opening date.

Young healthy people often consider themselves not to need insurance. Until that accident or catastrophic illness comes along and sets their future back a decade or so...

Hi Catalina... I really do appreciate your posts... I think it's important that you keep voicing your points...

I received my "Medicare & You 2014" book yesterday... The 2014 "Lifetime CAPS" STILL EXIST....... The CAPS that were instituted with Bush NewFreedom. This caused my arrested treatment 10 years ago now... They "left me behind".... Cruel!

And 'quality of care' from present politically radicalized Repub/Tparty/Libertarian docs is deplorable... They've been doing this since mid 2000s-- On Purpose. They are Business people, NOT true Doctors....

True Doctors could have DEALT with money issues in the 1980s... Now we are ALL affected. THEY MAKE WAY TOO MUCH MONEY for their skill levels and care. They think WAY too highly of their ability.

I would dare to say that some would be LOST on HOW TO DOCTOR if all the ultraExpensive "equipment" was taken away. They lost their "Art"...AND their "Heart"!!!

Heck, they have reduced "doctoring" to dispensing care through MACHINES. Like fastfood places can dispense sodas at their computerized fountains.... We need Revolution.... this ain't right!

One of my (t-party) doctors LET herself 'fall asleep' recently during her administration of my treatment. AND SHE had a lack of conscience.... she CHARGED the insurance FULL PRICE for 'not' doing the work. This AynRand enthusiast is a radicalized doomsday 'Christian' who complains BITTERLY about Money... yet SHE rips off government by charging for her nontreatment treatments. NO conscience!!!!

This is ridiculous. NOBama care will be highway robbery for pre-existing conditions. Wake up and smell the coffee, Cataline

I daresay, Ami, that your speculation about highway robbery would fall on deaf ears if you proposed to someone whose child has been denied insurance for, say, a tendency to seizures; asthma; how about hip dysplasia?

Now if you hsve some facts they could decide whether or not they agreed with you, but all you got is...speculation.

What price would you put on your child's eligibility for insurance?

You are so predictable, Cata. You are so self righteous when it suits you and no snarky when you are not on your high horse

I've just heard from a worker with the US Army how they've already suffered. The memorial is nothing compared to that, it's national security. Even the guys toward the bottom are feeling at as the gas stations on base close along with the commissaries and PXs. Doctors find their computers work at least, but should they break down again (as they frequently do) then there's no one to fix them and already some medical records have gone missing and some applications can't be filed (so far more a nuisance than a real liability, but a reminder how bad it can get when it's only been a couple of days and this could drag out for WEEKS). In any case, at least at one base the Army is pretty ticked off at one (Republican) or both sides right now.

OTOH, it's interesting to me to see an ultra-patriotic Cancer trash the Tea Party as he describes "the US Army falling apart before my eyes." Melodramatic IMO (not that I was about to tell him that), but he still pulls patriotic rhetoric off better than the Tea Party does (who tend to be just as melodramatic), but then he's actually read the Constitution and can describe how "Obamacare" got passed, vetted by the SCOTUS, and then become law rather than just throw some buzz words together to sound patriotic while slashing the military. I don't think he's passionate about it one way or another (the military is his passionate issue) but he sees it as having passed legitimately so that there's no excuse for this shut down.

However, he's now passionate against "Tea Party Republicans" and I believe Republican officials are now alienating even more of their moderate base (just as they did which cost them big in 2012). He often votes Republican as he sees that in the best interest of the military but I don't think he'll vote Republican again until there are some new faces, especially if this drags out as he's really ticked off about it. And not everyone on his base blames Democrats but about everyone blames Republicans (even if they believe Democrats share some of the blame which only some of them do).

Anyway, just sharing as I found it odd that most of the news focuses on the Memorial rather than what's happening to the military right now. More:
