water shortages ahoy! And yet neither Brown nor locals are mandating water restrictions. I don't get it. Politics? Restrictions don't win elections. Ask Carter. quote: If you look at the archaeological record, you see that the Native American population in the West expanded in the wet years that preceded those long droughts in the Medieval period. Then during the droughts, they were pretty much wiped out. There was the so-called Anasazi collapse in the Southwest about 800 years ago. In some ways, I see that as an analogy to us today. We’ve had this wetter 150 years and we’ve expanded. Now we’re using up all the available water, yet our population is still growing.
http://newscenter.berkeley.edu/2014/01/21/states-water-woes/ drier, colder, wetter, warmer periods happen with or without us. The problem is we are not as flexible, as movable as were our ancestors. IP: Logged |

Makes you wonder doesn't it that the tree hugger left is all for ethanol blended into gasoline to fuel our autos. BUT, out of the other side of their mouths, the tree huggers bemoan the declining fresh water availability worldwide. The tree hugging left seems intellectually incapable of connecting the dots. It takes up to 2,100 gallons of fresh water to produce one, (1) gallon of ethanol...ranging down to 100 gallons of fresh water to produce 1 gallon of ethanol. Most gasoline sold in the US contains 10% or more ethanol...by government decree. The tree huggers say they're concerned about fresh water supplies...but, they're all in favor of synthetic fuels of which ethanol is a major player. Makes one wonder if the tree huggers are in possession of the facts or, does the tree hugging left just need something to protest. For my part, I would end subsidies for corn producers for ethanol production...yesterday. Diverting food crop producing acreage to synthetic fuel production..ethanol, is starving the most vulnerable in the world, those living close to the edge of starvation. The so called, self identifying compassionate don't seen to give a rat's ass about that. "A gallon of ethanol, depending on irrigation practices, might require up to 2,100 gallons of water to produce. While, in areas more suited to corn production, it can take as little as 100 gallons of water to produce a gallon of ethanol." http://www.ecogeek.org/biofuels/2680 IP: Logged |

Couldn't agree more Jwhop, and then there's fracking. Imagine fracking in a drought...imagine fracking at all, flaming water and people sickening...ethanol and fracking both are disgusting alternatives. Then again, the chemicals used in oil production are pretty lethal when they get in the air or spill. I am not sure how that battle is going in California but lo and behold! We thoight they had stopped only to find it ain't so...And tarsands is right.up there with the worst of them. Mranwhile Nestle are getting ready to make water a privatized business. Nice, eh? Ethanol? Who the hell is behind ethanol apart from the gov or those backed by? There are no legit tree huggers I know of who will back corn, or soy for that matter. Even Greenpeace backed off. 40% of corn production in the US is earmarked for ethanol. Approx 90% of the US corn crop is gmo. Corn is destroying our family farms, destroying our ecosystem, destroying our food supply. Find me a tree hugger who will give that the thumbs up? Industry did this. Industrialized farming did this. Not treehuggers. When I'm in the mind to ruin my day I watch King Corn IP: Logged |

Yes there's a creepy vid out there of the head of Nestle stumping for the idea that privatizing water will create even more jobs.. in it, he takes the viewer on a tour of their most up to date facility, crowing about how few people it requires! Perhaps we will all be Tasters, working for the right to drink the samples haha! An official drought has been declared but we still have plenty of room for correction by mother nature. Perhaps if they don't suck all the water up for fracking we will not have to stop bathing, or growing our own food ... IP: Logged |

The Environmentalists [gasp] who presciently spoke of water becoming a cash cow were more than right. The disaster in WV, with the poisoning of water delivered to millions, should bring this to national attention. It didn't. The CDC tells that only 300,000 people were effected, and that the licorice smell coming from their water, is 'OK' to drink. The back page of all the nuws. Only those paying attention to issues like this noticed. Waayy unfortunate. http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/west_virginia_toxic_disaster_requires_ more_than_silence_20140120 quote: I can’t help but wonder what the reaction would be if this had happened on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, or in one of the wealthier ZIP codes of Southern California. Imagine living for a week without tap water for drinking, cooking, bathing, even washing clothes. Imagine restaurants having to shut down, hotels putting sinks and showers off-limits, nursing homes trying to care for patients with only bottled water at their disposal imagine learning that there was essentially no information on the long-term health effects of a chemical you could smell everywhere you went.
The company responsible Freedom Industries (sounds like heartland institute doesn't it?? ) Has not been inspected since The 90's! Many people believe the government over-regulates, they stifle industry. I think this is a very good example of where regulation protects us. IP: Logged |

Florida seems to have become schizoid, with balmy days in some parts and snow in others, according to a Floridian in a weather photography group I belong to.Heavy winter storms and temps in the midwest but in New York, zero days followed by record highs followed by the return of the Frigidaire Monster... It strikes me that instead of trying to control the weather it would be more practical to move surplus precipitation to where there is not enough...it would be pwrhaps too low-tech for the modern millies but create jobs(truck drivers, ski resorts, farming and fishing) oand/or profits...but nothing that simple is likely to be effected. I'm watching The Day After Tomorrow on SyFy right now. All of that stuff was caused by "global warming," including a rise of 25 feet in sea levels. It's so warped from what reality is that I can't help but to laugh. The alarmists got their wish. IP: Logged |

Cat, I heard you got a bit of rain. Is more on the way? I spent my birthday shoveling 4 ft of heavy global warming off my roofs... Already, we are over 3O inchs of snow than normal winters end with 8 more potential snow fall weeks left hoorah for global warming ------------------ Christian, Jew, Muslim, Shaman, Zoroastrian, stone, ground, mountain, river, each has a secret way of being with the Mystery, unique and not to be judged. Wow, you had more than 30" of additional global warming snow to shovel off your roof juni? Well, that just proves the doomsayers of the man made global warming religion are right. Global warming has struck Florida too. We've had some days when the high temp didn't break 55*F. Help, we're burning up down here! IP: Logged |

And others that were unseasonably warm, from my friend in Tampa...Increased precipitation includes snow, folks! Yes we had a half decent rain the other day, juni, and apparently a couple of major storms on the way. I hope we get some snow, which will not flood my house! but if the sump pump decides to work this year I will welcome rain too. We got a new one last year, but only after the deluge came into my flat.. The drought scare-tactics are out in full force here...and the spectre of desalinization of the Bay is something the machine wants to push, apparently. I don't mind desalinizing but there is so much heavy metal and chemical pollution in that water I don't want to see that solution manifesting. All the while the frackers are sucking water out of the tables at alarming rates.... But new water-saving plumbing devices and appliances can literally save the water (and energy) that is recommended by the PTB, so hopefully a lot of people in that business will profit from this drought and save our water table too. yep jwhop and ole man winter is being generous and sending a heap of that warming eastward... Cat, good more is on the way. You folks are in dire need. It snows there? I think a lot of sump pumps are going to be working overtime this spring. We have so much snow, I am concerned about a quick spring thaw. That would be muddy nightmare! Including septic tanks and drain fields not working properly. ------------------ Christian, Jew, Muslim, Shaman, Zoroastrian, stone, ground, mountain, river, each has a secret way of being with the Mystery, unique and not to be judged.
