This link is but one segment of a full biography/history of Sharon. It neither eulogizes nor criticizes but includes his history, which of course includes a lot of facts about Israel's history too.

In the light of the recent drama over the braindead girl in California, the medical story of his stroke highlights how things can go wrong in tricky medical situations top. I couldn't help thinking that if he were in America a malpractice suit probably would have been a distinct possibility. Not that he was brain dead but that a different decision when he first had his stroke might have had a very different outcome.

It also illustrates how much criticism there is in Israel and from Jews for the country's policies re self-defense and relations with Arab peoples of several persussions and times. So, for future attempts to call such criticism "anti-semitic", the refutation of that slander is in the history of Israel.

Maybe it's because it won't be as much fun taking selfies at Sharon's funeral as it was at Mandela's. Then again, maybe it's because he hates Israel. By not attending he's passing up an opportunity to stop off and visit his muslim brotherhood homeboys, but I digress. Sending Joe Biden is tantamount to sending punchinello or the court jester minus his liliripes. In either case we can expect Biden to get drunk and make a clown of himself. Not that obama and "the bride of obama" couldn't and wouldn't have done the same thing. What does it say that obama refused to attend Margaret Thatcher's funeral and now Sharon's but he attended Mandela's funeral even if he did act like a clown and "the bride of obama" frowned and glared at everyone. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who over the years had sharp political disagreements with Ariel Sharon, especially over disengagement from the Gaza Strip, said Sunday he will forever be remembered as one of the country’s most prominent leaders and daring commanders.

“I think that he represents the generation of Jewish warriors who arose with the resumption of our independence,” Netanyahu said at the opening of Sunday’s weekly cabinet meeting.

“He was connected to the land, he knew it was necessary to defend the land, and he knew above all that our independence is our ability to defend ourselves by ourselves

At the cabinet meeting, which began with a moment of silence in Sharon’s honor, Netanyahu emphasized Sharon’s military, rather than diplomatic, legacy. “Arik was first and foremost a warrior and a commander, among the Jewish people’s greatest military leaders in modern times and throughout its history.”

Netanyahu praised Sharon for being recruited to Israel’s defense in his youth, and for the role he played in the War of Independence, the 1956 Sinai Campaign, the Six Day War, and especially the 1973 Yom Kippur War when he led the IDF across the Suez Canal , “something that led, for all intents and purposes, to a successful conclusion of a war that began under very difficult conditions for Israel.”

Netanyahu also praised him for establishing the fabled commando Unit 101 and thereby establishing Israel’s policy toward fighting terrorism, a policy that has lasted until this day: retribution and initiating action.

In a reference to the First Lebanon War, Netanyahu said Sharon continued this policy in distancing terrorism from our northern border

Why was he full of praise for Sadat's willingness to negotiate peace? In Sharon's words, he understood that Sadat was only interested in what was good for Egypt, but he commended him on being willing to go forward peacefully, which was good for Israel too.

In the long historic (not opinion or eulogy) piece I linked he talks about how, in the early days, fierce independence snd autonomy were necessary to establish Israel in the area. But he saw the world changing. He felt that too much aid from the US had taught Israel to be wary of taking steps that might anger her "benefactors". But he also accepted thst the world had changed and no country stood alone and separate any more, that cooperation was necessary and the good of all as important as the good of one's own interests.

Obviously Netanyahu didn't mention this because he disagreed with that decision... In a eulogy those disagreements are swept under the rug. But a huge portion of Israelis preferred Sharon's later tactics to the brutality of bombing the enemy (and all innocent bystanders) out of existence.

Many think the overly aggressive military approach which drove the Arabs out of Beirut served only to scatter them and thus create more groups than ever and a permanent battle without end. Sharon and others wanted to put an end to endless war.

Netanyahu's omitting of the later years'legacy was self serving, and imo disrespected the wisdom of many years' learning.

Such is politics, here, there and everywhere. Very few people are willing to admit that those who disagree might have a point and good intentions.
