Vermont Jettisons Single Payer Healthcare
By Aaron Goldstein on
12.18.14

Vermont's Democratic Governor Peter Shumlin announced yesterday that he is jettisoning plans to implement a single payer health care system in the Green Mountain state.

There were several factors that went into this decision. It would have required Vermont to substantially hike both income and payroll taxes. Moreover, there was a $150 million shortfall in federal funding from Medicaid as well as $152 million shortfall in federal funding that was to be received via an Obamacare waiver.

The bottom line is that the money just wasn't there and raising income and payroll taxes would do the state more harm than good.

If only President Obama had reached a similar conclusion on Obamacare.

Then again now Shumlin, like every other Governor in America, is stuck with Obamacare.

This is kind of all over the place in terms of logic. First, I thought from the title that Vermont had said "No" to single-payer healthcare, but they hadn't. Second, Obamacare and a single-payer system are not synonymous. Third, Obamacare would never depend upon the economics of income and payroll taxes, so such analysis would have been moot. Fourth, Obamacare is working at saving money. Fifth, Obamacare hasn't tanked the economy as the single-payer healthcare scheme analysis has projected in this story.

This story just seems to be an excuse to try to bolster one's opinion of one's opinion.

Silliness acoustic.

The Governor has dumped single payer healthcare plans for Vermont

Nor has O'BomberCare reduced healthcare costs. It's only transferred costs to others...while raising healthcare/insurance premiums and deductibles beyond the ability of most Americans to pay. There's no free lunch acoustic.

Americans rewarded O'Bomber and demoscats for O'BomberCare by kicking large numbers of demoscats out of their cushy congressional offices.

Obamacare Effect Linked to Lower Medical Cost Estimates

Gallup: Good reviews for Obamacare coverage

Further, it has been widely reported that increases in premiums are up a smaller percentage (2 - 5%) than they had been prior to the law (more than 10% annually).

This is the same way single payer works in England..except the NHS sets salaries and regulations for primary care docs, rather than the patients paying directly. This seems a big improvement AND covers Medicaid patients too
