If we are all so selfish, why are we giving billions of dollars in foreign aid to other countries?

In 2014 America spent $35 million on foreign aid. $33 billion was the projected aid for 2015.

Obama requested we spend $37.9 billion for 2016.

That money doesn't help people?

Those were not "conservative treehouse polls". Those were polls from all over the US...from more than 20 different sites.

Well, although I do agree that american culture and american people are open and "generous" (that needs to be defined), that is not why they give protect the rest of the world, because they do this essentially to be in control, and trump made a mistake yesterday by arguing germany south korea and japan, and saudi arabia should pay for their defense, indeed, this is how the US control those countries, no more money no more control.

Finally, although US have been decisive in wining WW2 and WW1, they, you, did enter the war only in 1917 and 1942. That is not to diminish the major role that the US played, but let's not forget what the soviets did, 20 millions dead, (civilians included) during WW2, they liberated all eastern europe (with an ulterior motive to take control of it, but isn't it exactly what the US did too with western europe, hence the military base in germany and probably other part of europe ?

I do recognize that the US didin't destroy democracy like the soviets did, but to what extent is the western model, partly built out of the enlightenment period, is democratic now and what is the democracy promoted, maintained, by the US in other countries ?

You'll find no walls preventing your escape and no one will be at the borders of the United States to turn you back.

When you arrive at your destination, you can go to any US Consular Office and easily renounce your US Citizenship.

Trump was actually booed. IMHO, An unheard of thing at a religious undertaking.

Altho afterwards, Cardinal Dolan said they did shake hands and vere cordial.

You do realise that foreign aid comes tied up with business agreements, right ?

In return for food aid the populations are required to accept vaccinations, or other medication tested on them...in case of Africa
Its often GMO food being dropped on them - Zimbabwe did not allow planes to unload, and send them back with a note 'we don't want your killing food'.
More than half of the financial aid is directed to programs other than humanitarian, ie. help the political process, or help foster governance etc

Another example from Africa:
USAID has targeted some $15 million in technical assistance for the energy sectors of developing countries. Read, US companies got contracts to build stuff, for which the receiving country has to pay later. U.S. assistance has built a $50 billion annual market for private power. U.S. firms are capturing the largest share of the $50 billion annual market for private power in these markets.
