Well-said, BW! Bravo! They shouldn't be allowed to drive either. As a side note, are we going to ban cars now? Wait--that's exactly what Gore wants to do! Of course, he would still be allowed to caravan around in limos and fly in his bloated private jet.IP: Logged |

Right. Look at Australia. They had one mass murder, and put a stop to people owning guns. I will never understand the love affair with guns over here, OR that being put before people's welfare, or healthcare. IP: Logged |

It's not a love affair. It's a right. So important, in fact, that the Founding Fathers placed it number two, after free speech and religion.IP: Logged |

It's a sick obsession with guns. It is a love affair. A stupid one. IP: Logged |

He's right in that it is an exceptionally important right. It was put in as a failsafe, to ensure the people had the power to defend themselves against the overreaching government, if need be.The memory of the Revolution was still fresh in our founding fathers' memories. At that time, taking up arms was treasonous, and the blowback from our protestations was particularly violent. We had no standing army, and the Minute Men were originally just a cobbling together of hunters who happened to own muskets. We were only able to get nicer weaponry, because Benjamin Franklin was brilliantly able to garner the sympathy of the French. Otherwise, the revolutionists were bound to be slaughtered. Heck, they never envisioned having a permanent armed force at all, and felt it was the people themselves who would protect their sovereignty. Our founding fathers considered access to an equal means of self-defense a basic human right, and rightly so. They would be considered constitutional conservatives in the present age, staunch supporters of laissez-faire, and greatly disappointed in the enormous nanny state we have forged. I say this as someone who greatly dislikes firearms, and would never touch, much less own one, and feel uncomfortable knowingly being in the same room as one. I support conceal carry laws, because it takes the visual stimulus away, while maintaining the actual security. I don't like guns. But I'll fight for the people's right to have one, because it is very important. IP: Logged |
