First.. i would say that i am not particularly pro-vax. Nor do i think all vax are bad. The risks are well known by govt and manufacturers but screening for contraindications is discouraged and many of the vax are not up to their sales pitches for many reasons. Someone very close to me is one of the "injured" tho he will likely never get any compensation and autism had no relation to his issues.

But

I think there is a lout of hysteria on both sides and I hate to see a reasonable request.. that more care be taken and more choice allowed.. torpedoed by sensationalism and misinfo on the subject

Polio hasn't been eradicated. Both polio and smallpox have made a comeback. Here is a very interesting scholarly article written by two of my law professors:

The article actually makes distinctions you didn't bother with.

Smallpox has reared its head again .. true .. but "as a biological weapon" ie someone got their hands on lab stores and reintroduced it to a population no longer vaccinated for it.

Polio WAS eradicated in the US however with air travel creating a global community, the polio that exists in countries not vaxxed can now travel here. And in some countries it never went away.

Your contention that it was declining before vax is also ignoring the fact that 1952 was one of the worst seasons ever for polio.. and prompted the public outcry for a vaccine which was introduced two years later and trialled even earlier.

The graph here shows the dramatic decline from 55 onward.. previous years, apart from 47, were up and down some but fairly steady overall. Post 1950 the numbers look smaller - because they're divided into two categories not linked into one...
