South Carolina reminds me of Oregon.

It would be 160 years ago on 4/12/2021.

------------------------------------------

In late 1860 and early 1861, South Carolina and other southern states withdrew from the Union. They formed a new nation called the Confederate States of America.

But Abraham Lincoln, the president of the United States, said the southern states did not have right to secede. And he said he would not accept the South’s demand to remove U.S. soldiers from South Carolina. The soldiers defended a base in Charleston Harbor called Fort Sumter.

So, Confederate leaders ordered an attack. Just before sunrise on April 12, 1861, a shell exploded above Fort Sumter. It was the first shot fired in the American Civil War.

You sound like you want violence. I don’t.

I was recently feeling a little nostalgic for March, and the first part of April, because we really were all in this together. People were looking out for each other, and talking about things, or helping with distraction. It was heartening, during an unsettling time. Then everything exploded in April and May, because some people had to go crazy- this country always goes crazy somehow. The US of the last four years isn’t what drew people here over the years. Hopefully we can get back to what was good about it, and MAGA people won’t get to destroy it completely. I really feel like you’re under some kind of spell, because the alternative is worse.

The midway year between the two dates would be 1941 when the USA entered World War II.

It would be interesting to see what the exact midway date is.

--------------------------------------------

1941

Japan attacks Pearl Harbor, and the US enters the war.

Teasel, I think Trump is better at making peace than Abe Lincoln.

Check all the recent Middle East peace deals.

There is a component of the conservative establishment that will go to war faster, but they want Trump out.

They hate that Trump is making peace.

Lincoln was inaugurated a month before the Civil War began.

------------------------------------------

Plainly, the central idea of secession, is the essence of anarchy.

Abraham Lincoln becomes the 16th president of the United States on March 4, 1861. In his inauguration speech, Lincoln extended an olive branch to the South, but also made it clear that he intended to enforce federal laws in the states that seceded.

Brown was against slavery and was hung in 1859, but notice Lincoln addresses how white men tried to rial up blacks.

Sounds eerily similar today.

The following quote was by Lincoln:

-----------------------------------------

John Brown's effort was peculiar. It was not a slave insurrection. It was an attempt by white men to get up a revolt among slaves, in which the slaves refused to participate.
