We have various levels of lockdown here in Scotland based mainly on the R number (transmission rate). Most of them aren't really that restrictive, the main hit is the hospitality sector and meeting in homes.

If the US doesn't impose something similar then they will be one of the few places in the world to not do so because everywhere is seeing similar trends of transmission.

It's difficult to see locking-down or not locking down solely as a political tool when there is ample evidence across the world that it is helping slow transmission. There is a public health basis to it also.
