I think the problem with most lockdowns is that they were not implemented at an early enough stage in the pandemic. This study results speak of an increase in 'excess deaths' as a result of lockdowns, these will likely be from people who couldn't or didn't access healthcare and/or screening for ongoing or new health issues unrelated to COVID-19. Here, at least, this has been reported.
The stand out result for me from this study is where they specify that lockdowns did in fact work prior to the peak of the pandemic, but after the peak did not. This is consistent with other reports I've read about the timing of lockdowns.
