Randall.. I wanted to respond after you posted this.First, I'm happy to hear that your mom is okay.
I ALWAYS think of her during the Easter months. We've had conversations in other threads about the kinds of past-activities she and her group get involved-in-- the sacrifices they make for the sake of the community, at this time each year.
I personally KNOW the amount of labor and prep that goes into what her group does-- hosting people who come to church FOR this Holiday/Holy-Day. ..
And you've already disclosed the surprise that your general family vote as registered Democrats. 
So, on the visit to your mom, I'm glad you got some exposure. Yesterday was Saturday. Saturday's line-up on MSNBC is not their usual-set. These are the more-junior people making the efforts to rise up in the ranks.
After I read your post, I was empathizing with how you must be feeling. 
They are not into the hatred of Trump? (sad)..
Trump has made some grievous mistakes--
He doesn't have the ability to Understand the importance of what the Government IS with a complete understanding of what it does. WHAT it was Created for!
.. It's NOT a Business.
It's NOT a Corporation.
Running Government as though it were-- leads to human crises and disasters, when those arise. It's part of the role of Government to coordinate and keep-alive its citizens.
In the past, it was 'designed' to function that way.

So, while I was thinking about what you said, and your sad-face, an analogy popped into my mind.
It might help you to understand Government by thinking about its functions as parts of your own body.
When I read the scriptures of Paul comparing The Body of Christ with the functioning of the parts of the Church, I thought it was an apt analogy to understanding how the Government functions.
1 Corinthians Chapter 12,
the writer (Paul) was talking about the institution called The Church, making an analogy--
comparing the church to being and functioning AS a Whole Living Body.
WE are The Body of Christ on the Earth.
Every individual's part, is AS-important as the other.
If some of these factors are off, then it can affect the Whole.
{Stub your little toe, and the WHOLE Body can immediately be affected!}

Our Government is as an alive-organism.
Each 'part' {departments, etc} does its function, and ADDS to the Whole.
Our Founders drafted and constructed the huge puzzle of it to Serve.. The People.

We had gone through a terrible crisis in the early 1900s, and had to invent different types of Social Programs to keep The People who were struggling, alive--
They went further to set-up safety-nets that ensure survival for all Americans in the future-- they had Vision. They formed a long-range plan showing foresight about potential swings of Capitalism.
The 1900's had an early vicious pandemic-- Not only was it here in the USA, but infected the World at large.

The leaders and historians observed two World-Wars--
With insight, they identified specific errors that led to the rise of an evil dictatorship; they pinpointed the pattern of slick subtle errors made by 1900's Germany-government--
It led to the forming of Nazi militia groups,
that were a 'base of support' for Hitler's rise as a terrible lone-power 
(not a good man)

So in the immediate time-period in OUR US government,
after 2000 we found ourselves becoming more and more 'partisan'. It used to be, that the parties chose their candidates, but once they were Seated, they were expected to act on the behalf of ALL. They represented the concerns of each in the WHOLE of making laws that Serve the WHOLE in a safe and fair way!

Trump really-truly does NOT have a holistic understanding of what the purpose of Government is.
Because of that, he's {unknowingly?} mishandled things.
He {didn't know} that he had a lack of knowledge and extremely limited education FOR a job in Government. This shouldn't have mattered but-- He stubbornly {foolishly} did not accept the help that was available to him in his beginning days. ..
His inaugural speech was SHOCKING!!
HE began his speech with reveal of 'the hatred' and 'divisive' spirit inside him; he pits ONE entire party {Dems} as EVIL. ... That is FAR from The Truth. WAY far...
Right now, we have a new admin.
Biden has a Heart FOR The People.
He has a background of NOT being raised in privilege. Because of that, he sees what's wrong right now, and is attempting to assist the poor and middle-class that is SEVERLY affected by Capitalism on STEROIDS. Economically VERY unbalanced.
Former admin .. doesn't have the ability to empathize because of being raised in Wealth. He just couldn't realize how BAD things ARE for the poor and economically-disadvantaged. They can't 'make enough money' in THIS age, to afford even the BASIC things right now. This has needed attention!
He's lived a life of having EVERYTHING handed to him. He does not have the 'experience-bank' {nor an inborn ability to resonate/empathize} with folks that have NOT.
You had mentioned the way 'elites' live in other thread(s). They have no clue-- unless they were born with a sensitivity, and feel a duty to share {because of how MUCH they have}-- they want to Do for Others. Reduce suffering in this world.
Something SUPER unfair, is that most of the legislators are of the Wealth classes... They pay LITTLE tax, compared to economically average Americans. ALL these OBSESSIONS about Tax Cuts-- HURTS the Average American and RAISES their OWN Wealth.
I want to congratulate you for sitting through two hours of MSNBC. For increasing your ability to SEE, Randall. SEE from another point of view. ... Seriously, most regular Americans NEED the Balancing of Government, of the importance of listening to the truth of the PLIGHT of people right now!!!
