So Randall's 'Oh No's Biden is Racist' thread got me thinking on the many crook and crannies of modern culture which CRT has also identified as racist.Thought maybe I'd dedicate a thread to this, so those of you losing sleep over such things could stay informed. Thought I'd start with birds. IP: Logged |

The Racist Legacy of Birds aka Decolonizing Whitey Birdwatching http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/bird-lovers-are-grappling-with-honorary-names-linked-to-racists-audubon-tops-the-list/ar-AAKGswo?ocid=BingNewsSearch&pfr=1 Corina Newsome is a Black ornithologist, as rare as some of the birds she studies. When she joined Georgia Audubon last year, the group’s executive director called her hiring a first step to “begin working to break down barriers” so that people from all communities can fully enjoy birding and the outdoors.
But overcoming those barriers will be daunting. As with the wider field of conservation, racism and colonialism is in ornithology’s DNA, indelibly linked to its origin story. The challenge of how to move forward is roiling White ornithologists as they debate whether to change as many as 150 eponyms, names of birds that honor people with connections to slavery and supremacy. Thanks for another Twitter link, teasel. Who is this Julie Oliver? Looks like she is a "healthcare finance expert" running for Congress. I love a little campaign entertainment as much as the next person, but let's look at this with a sober eye, yes? Can you tell us anything about the Texas law she refers to? Meanwhile in Cali .... http://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/california-blackouts-this-summer-state-offers-guarded-optimism-the-lights-will-stay-on/ar-BB1golR3 IP: Logged |

This is so tiresome. I really question the mental health of people who are obsessed with such things. IP: Logged |

I am trying to understand. They feel that by giving birds less white names, there will be many more minorities who are going to start bird watching? As in, a group of black folks are going to get together and Oh, let's go see if we can find the MLK woodpecker? IP: Logged |

Yesterday we discovered that racism is for the birds. Today I thought we'd have a look at the problematic PB&J http://www.huffpost.com/entry/is-peanut-butter-and-jelly-racist_n_1874905 .. In conjunction with recent equity training in local Portland schools, one principal is raising questions about the mention of the sandwich, arguing it has broader implications about race, the Portland Tribune reports. The sandwich was reportedly mentioned in a lesson plan last year. Verenice Gutierrez from the Harvey Scott K-8 School used it as an example of a subtle form of racism in language, according to the report. “What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” Gutierrez said, according to the Tribune. “Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.” As part of a training program known as “Courageous Conversations” that has been phased into Portland schools in recent years, the Tribune reports that staff members at Gutierrez’s school have been going through trainings, classroom observations and exercises, such as reading a news article and then talking about it from the perspective of “white privilege.” The organization behind the program is Pacific Educational Group. According to the group’s website, their aim is to help minority students through initiatives that address racial educational disparities, “intentionally, explicitly, and comprehensively.” IP: Logged |

the former Principal Gutierrez is, as you might expect, a professional "equity worker" http://www.equityfellows.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1618074&type=u&pREC_ID=1999271 Dr. Gutierrez has engaged in racial equity work and been committed to creating inclusive educational spaces for marginalized communities since 2007. As a principal of a K- 8 school in Portland, OR, Dr. Gutierrez's equity work received national attention as she worked to disrupt systemic racism. She transitioned from doing equity work as a principal to engaging with school districts across the country as an Educational Transformation Specialist with Pacific Educational Group, the parent company for Courageous Conversations. Two angles I think worth noting 1) the Right played this story as joke. ("Is grilled cheese sexist?? hur dur") A freak situation born of a freak educator, easily dismissed. No. Gutierrez was fully backed by her schoolboard. She was in no way reprimanded. She was promoted. She was rewarded with more power, more access to children 2) The Left played (and Center understood) the story to be one of grassroots, local activism. Mexican American principal empathizes with her immigrant students, protects them from white bullies, defends their culture etc. No. Gutierezz wasnt a lone agent, she was doing the work of a large org, the Pacific Educational Group. PEG, not PB&J, is the real story here. PEG makes millions off school districts across the country despite it's lackluster success rate. It's basic extortion. Have they weaseled their way into your school district? http://alphanewsmn.com/mn-public-school-district-took-stand-white-privilege-training/ “PEG has instilled a culture of fear among a number of teachers,” Gerhart states. “PEG likes to talk about having ‘courageous conversations,’ however in reality they have a number of ‘protocols’ in place that you have to agree and adhere to before taking part in the ‘conversation.’ These protocols frame the context of the discussion before the conversation even takes place, in essence disallowing true discussion much less debate or disagreement. If a person does not agree to these basic protocols, it is regarded as evidence of that person’s inherent racism. And remember, according to PEG, all white people are inherently racist no matter what, so a number of our teachers simply keep their mouths shut for fear of being labeled “racist” and getting fired or bullied out of their jobs.” IP: Logged |
