Biden has agreed to the House bill. It is being released to the public. A vote is being held back for 72 hours, so every member can read it. Then it goes to the Senate. The bill contains a work requirement for SNAP benefits. It raises DOD funding and veteran’s benefits, but other than that, it decreases spending from the previous year’s budget. For every new dollar spent, a dollar must be cut. It cuts back on environmental powers for the first time in decades, especially with streamlining NEPA, which hasn't happened in 40 years. The CDC's Global Health Initiative was completely unfunded. The $1.9 billion in new IRS agent funding for this year was ended, along with a total of $10 billion out of the $80 billion initially allocated for 87,000 new IRS agents, so this looks like it will need to be prevented the next fiscal year also. And Biden was deprived of all his new taxes! BTW, this is a 150-page bill, not a thousand plus pages as usual. On the downside, unfortunately, the House threw Biden a bone and allowed him to keep his Inflation Reduction Act (it will be reversed after the 2024 election) and his loan forgiveness program (SCOTUS will rule against it anyway).IP: Logged |

What about the people who can't work? I remember one woman, who was a republican, by the way, who was bedbound, and she lost her benefits for months, because her southern state decided that she didn't need them anymore.IP: Logged |

Funny how you always 'remember' things that never happened. IP: Logged |

Why don’t you address that concern with Biden, who approved of the work requirements, or to the Dems who are going to vote for it? IP: Logged |

Work requirements will also apply for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), but not for Medicaid (that requirement was dropped). It only applies to those with no children. The age exemption was moved from 47 to 54. But benefits were increased for the homeless and for veterans.IP: Logged |

Correction and update: The revised bill is only 99 pages. House members received it around 8:00 pm last night.IP: Logged |

I'm going to have to look that bill up. I'm uneasy that democrats are protesting about the bill saying there's nothing in the bill for them....but want to pass it anyway.Perhaps a case of democrats 'protesting too much'...which could mean it's another sell-out by squishy RINO republicans. Majority leader Scalise is calling out McCarthy for caving in to Biden and letting him get funding to hire 85,260 IRS agents who are going to go after your money. https://slaynews.co m/news/mccarthy-caves-biden-fails-block-funding-87000-new-irs-agents/?utm_source=mailpoet&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=daily-newsletter Now, the deal includes keeping a portion of the $80 billion increase in IRS funding and the 87,000 additional agents tasked with going after middle-class families.
Only $1.9 billion was removed from the budget of $80 billion to fund 87,000 IRS agents. “Of the $80 billion Democrats appropriated to the IRS over ten years, the ‘deal’ rescinds $1.9 billion,” said Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC). “You read that right. “That’s the kind of ‘get’ that’s so good McCarthy agreed to increase the debt ceiling $4 trillion.” “Kevin says we can fight again NEXT year to rescind another year of the IRS $80 billion … but he simultaneously prevented that ‘fight’ by agreeing to suspend the debt ceiling for TWO years,” he added. “So there will be 85,260 more IRS agents rather than 87,000 to eat you alive. Big win.

Not a good sign... The RINOS sold us out again.

Could be, but no new taxes and no new IRS agents are a win in my opinion. IP: Logged |

Regarding the bolded, were there amendments made to that effect? The way I understand the bill, it gives enough money to the IRS to hire close to 80,000 new IRS agents... IP: Logged |

My understanding is that funding for this year was pulled from the IRS and that we will do it again next time until we are able to chunk it completely with the 2024 election. In other words, the IRS has no money to hire a single new agent for this funding period.IP: Logged |

That's not what the conservative pundits I read are saying. I myself have not peaked into the finer details of the bill so this is a case where I am relying on them to form an opinion. We shall see.

All I know is what the Speaker said. The $1.9 billion removes all new agent funding for the the next year. I think some Republicans, for whatever reason, are fearmongering, much like Dems are known to do (at least on this issue).IP: Logged |

My main concern is that those taxes were shot down! So, we don't need any new IRS agents.IP: Logged |
