Every 80 to 100 years, the U.S. goes through a shift, a major national crisis. Geopolitical crisis and internal political crisis are characteristic of a historical cycle called “The Fourth Turning.” The Fourth Turning is the title of a book, in which the authors, William Strauss and Neil Howe, present their theory of generational cycles of Western and American history. In brief, there are four quarters or “turnings” of a recurring cycle and the Fourth Turning is the one we are in now. Internally, there is enormous tribalization and polarization, and a distrust in government, as we find today. Externally, we find a pervasive “us vs. them” mind set and nations striving for geopolitical supremacy over other nations. This is the view of the realist school of international relations today where the foreign policy of the major nations in the world is viewed as being based predominantly on consideration of power dynamics with other nations.Past Fourth Turnings include the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the late Great Depression and World World II, and today. During each of these times, we’ve seen unique individuals arise: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, and today Donald J. Trump, who has been likened to Isaiah 45 Cyrus. Unusual types of deliverers tend to appear during a Fourth Turning. Like DJT, the biblical Cyrus was an outsider who came to deliver his people. A leader within the charismatic Christian community predicted prior to 2016 that the 45th president would be an Isaiah 45 Cyrus and that he would be likened to Cyrus. Interestingly, Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, also likened DJT to Cyrus.
