He is getting lots of flack from the fringe that now dominates the democratic party. Did he made this statement for long term reasons? Possibly betting that by 2028, the trans issue will be gone from the dems agenda and will position him as a valid forerunner?

That's a long bet. But I wouldn't be surprised if he retracted because he has no real conviction. He will only say and do what he thinks will benefit him politically short or long term.
