This man led a peaceful protest, he has a green card, and is married to a US citizen. His wife is eight months pregnant, and they apparently arrested him without a warrant. This should concern every person in this country. It doesn't matter if you disagree with his views, this goes against his rights, and could happen to any of us. You know: the things that MAGA accused of liberals doing, when they weren't? New statement from Mahmoud Khalil’s wife: “Instead of putting together our nursery and washing baby clothes in anticipation of our first child, I am left sitting in our apartment, wondering when Mahmoud will get a chance to call me from a detention center.”The family is accepting financial support here: http://chuffed.org/project/justice-for-mahmoud-khalil IP: Logged |

It is against the law to attempt to convert others to join terroristic groups such as Hamas. He handed out pro-Hamas literature. As a green card holder, he has to obey all federal laws. He didn't engage in peaceful protest. He blocked Jewish students from attending their classes (among other things). IP: Logged |

Do you call breaking the windows of Hamilton Hall and illegally occupying the building a peaceful protest? This happened on April 30, 2024. Now, Khalil was not one of those protesters who did the breaking and entering and occupying of this building, but he was one of the mediators/negociators between the protesters and Columbia. I don't think this role as negotiator should mark him for deportation, but I don't know what else he has done, what evidence he has been charged with. Neither do you, I am sure. IP: Logged |

CUAD (Columbia University Apartheid Divest) calls itself a coalition of organizations for a free Palestine. On their substack page : https://cuapartheiddivest.substack.com/p/resistance-reaches-the-core-of-the They quote Vladimir Lenin, Mao Zedong, and they support Hamas, Hezbollah, and Ansarallah, referring to them as "resistance" fighters. I suppose as a so called leader of the movement, Khalil is part of this coalition. However the US State Department has designated Hamas, Hezbollah, and Ansarallah as foreign terrorist organizations. Freedom of speech does exist, but I suspect the rules are different for Americans vs non Americans. If they can prove Khalil is part of CUAD, this is probably the legal ground they are using to say that they want to revoke his green card status and deport him. You may not like it, but they may have the legal ground to do that. I could be wrong as I am not a legal expert on immigration laws, so it's just my 2 cents... IP: Logged |

Here is an interesting article from NPR about freedom of speech issue for green card holders and how it applies to the case of Khalil: https://www.npr.org/2025/03/11/nx-s1-5323208/what-rights-do-green-card-holders-have-in-the-u-s It is quite possible that the deportation will be successfully challenged... We shall see. IP: Logged |
