Kaine Condemns Trump’s Comments on Birthright Citizenship Supreme Court Case
WASHINGTON, D.C. –
Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), a former civil rights lawyer and constitutional law professor, criticized President Donald Trump for his comments in which he urged the Supreme Court to side with the Administration’s efforts to roll back birthright citizenship, and for denigrating the United States as “a stupid country” and “suckers.”

“President Trump’s unhinged Truth Social rant calling America a ‘stupid country’ is profoundly disrespectful and lays bare the fact that he simply doesn’t understand the U.S. Constitution, our history, or the concept of birthright citizenship. Birthright citizenship means that no matter who your parents are or where they are from, if you are born here, you are an American,” said Kaine. “I am glad that Trump’s blatantly-unconstitutional executive order attempting to redefine birthright citizenship has been repeatedly blocked from taking effect by the lower courts. It is my hope that it will be definitively rejected by the Supreme Court.”

Kaine has been a leading voice emphasizing the well-established foundation of birthright citizenship in American law and the benefits it has brought to American society. In January 2025, he gave a detailed floor speech in opposition to then-President-elect Trump’s stated intention to end birthright citizenship by executive order. In October 2018, during Trump’s first term, Kaine condemned his illegal proposal to revoke birthright citizenship.
