Ukraine-Russia war latest: Poland ‘closest to conflict since WWII’ after Russian drones shot down, says Tusk

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/poland-russia-drones-ukraine-war-putin-nato-latest-news-b2823643.html

Poland is as close to conflict as it has been since the Second World War after a “huge number” of Russian drones violated its air space overnight, prime minister Donald Tusk has said.

Polish air defences and Nato aircraft sprung into action overnight after the drones its airspace during a major air attack on western Ukraine.

Mr Tusk held an emergency meeting on Wednesday morning after saying Poland’s airspace was “violated by a huge number of Russian drones”. There have been no reports of any injuries.

There were 19 objects which intruded into Polish airspace overnight with many drones entering from Belarus, he later said parliament. Three drones are confirmed to have been shot down.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed there is “increasing evidence” that Poland was deliberately targeted, as leaders across the EU and Warsaw say the incursion appears intentional.

Mr Tusk has activated Article 4 of the Nato treaty, which does not mandate military action but would demands a discussion between member states.

Operations at airports in Warsaw, Modlin and Rzeszow - which were all closed after the incursion - have been reopened. The airport in Lublin remains temporarily closed.

Russia immediately said that it was trying to reach a different part of Ukraine after doing so twice last week. That part was conveniently left out.
