A Metaphor for Society’s Hypnosis

Once upon a time, there was a rich magician who had a great many sheep. But the magician was very mean & he didn’t want to hire shepherds or put up a fence around the pasture, so the sheep often wandered off to the jungle & got into trouble. They even ran away sometimes, because they knew that the magician only wanted their flesh and skin.

One day, the magician had an idea. He would hypnotize the sheep! So, that they would no longer be afraid of him or try to escape.

He would make them believe that they were immortal, that he was a good master who loved them, and that they had nothing to fear from him. He would also make them believe that they were not sheep at all, but lions, eagles, men, or even magicians themselves.

The magician’s plan worked perfectly. The sheep were now content to stay in the pasture and waited patiently for the magician to take their flesh and skins. They no longer ran away, and they even seemed to enjoy being hypnotized.
