immy Kimmel’s ratings drop revealed after big spike for return episode
Story by Nouman Rasool

Jimmy Kimmel’s return to late night wasn’t quiet it exploded. His comeback episode on ABC pulled in 6.26 million viewers, his biggest audience in years. To put that in perspective, that’s a 23 percent share of the entire late-night market, the kind of dominance not seen since Johnny Carson’s days.

Even more surprising, those numbers came despite a boycott that kept nearly a quarter of ABC affiliates from airing the show. The buzz was undeniable, with clips from the monologue racking up more than 14 million views online within hours.

But just a few days later, the story shifted. By Thursday, Kimmel’s audience had plunged to 2.3 million, a 64 percent drop from his big night. The decline was sharpest in the younger demographics TV executives prize most. Among adults 25–54, viewership sank from 1.7 million to just 465,000. The 18–49 demo, the lifeblood of advertising, fell from 1.2 million down to around 334,000.

It was a free fall that underlined how much of his initial surge was fueled by curiosity rather than loyalty.

A spike that didn’t stick
Before the suspension, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” averaged about 1.77 million viewers, already a far cry from the 2.4 million he was pulling in 2015. In other words, even after the drop, he’s still slightly above his most recent baseline but nowhere close to sustaining the viral bump. That return episode was fueled by months of headlines after his suspension over controversial remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s death.

The controversy turned into a spotlight, and when he finally returned, the mix of scandal, curiosity, and social media shares drew millions who normally wouldn’t have tuned in.

The challenge now is whether Kimmel can hold onto even a fraction of those extra viewers. The internet traffic proves his voice still resonates far beyond ABC’s time slot, but translating viral moments into steady ratings is the hard part.

So what? That’s totally normal.

What isn’t normal, is the president having a talk show host fired, because that host made a really mild joke about him.

It's normal for a show to have failing ratings? If President Trump had this clown fired, he would have stayed fired. President Trump had nothing to do with it.

Kimmel was furious about JD making fun of his low ratings.
