Sounds idealistic, LEXX. Good point, but it's worth a try

I challenge you to sink that frustration into WORDS (or action). That's right. Start a thread and focus on bringing clarity to the issues that bother you - DISCUSS why something is unfair, and prove it on your thread, for everyone else to participate in...

Sounds good in theory but I see the pitfalls. Perception isn`t "proveable" and sadly , it would just become a subjective thread loaded with personal baggage

In my professsional life, less so in my personal life, the biggest single thing that gets my goat is someone that doesn't listen, someone that doesn't hear.

I am not one that talks for the sake of talking, but seem to listen endlessly to those that do.

When I speak up, it is usually on the back of endless listening and feeling compelled to express an opinion.

So, for me personally, a great lesson for everyone would be to take a step back and LISTEN.

ps - I found many of you guys one year ago today - HAPPY BIRTHDAY - how odd that it coincides with AGs b'day!

I think the challenge is to make it non subjective by using research. Right?

Like in other words if you are wanting to talk about rape or molestation you would use statics and facts that you actually looked up instead of just opinion.

That's the way I took it.

How should one respond to any person making fun of any serious and sensitive issue?
Suicide, STDs, and so forth?

I`m certain that is the game plan Gypsee but.... too many times a genuine thread gets trashed

It feels like an open invitation for trolls & psychos to play on. All one can do is give it a shot !

I would post a topic about the ridicule of people with STD's... about discrimination towards those suffering with disease, or about the insensitivity of those who laugh or about, or even AROUND, those in pain & suffering...

Then I would give examples, descriptions, personal experiences, and facts, statistics, etc.

I have actually been trying to do this here for a couple of weeks, posting about other issues that really bother me, instead of just focusing on ONE person's issues.

It helps me put this forum back into perspective, and make me more comfortable here.

As to responding to those people directly, I would request that they excuse themselves from participation...

Just like a classroom.

However;
that will not help when the issue is any person laughing about serious issues.
Facts/statistics would only make it more amusing to the one not treating the issue(s) seriously and do nadda for their lack of showing respect for those who have died for example, from STDs.

I agree, LEXX. In that situation, I think it would be good for someone to just ask that the person excuse themselves from the conversation... explaining that their laughter, disinterest, and immaturity was serving as a distraction to others learning about an important subject.

EXCELLENT IDEA!
That was what I should have done instead when a certain person was making fun of STDs.
Thank you PS, wise advice!

Well that was being done by the OP and myself, yet that all made it more hilarious to the person who made fun.

I agree.
Sure, personal issue threads are fine, but each should limit the number of personal threads in a given time period.

Well, I do not think that would have worked in that particular case.
As it was I had to re-open the thread because said person closed it.
If such should happen again, I honestly am not sure what to do.
I wrote Randall about it.
I think he may have misunderstood the point I was making.
I did not care if she had an opinion;
it was the making fun of the issue which I was disapproving of.

I'm glad you like it, LEXX. We have so many brilliant and deep and wise people here, and I'd hate to see all the opportunity for us to learn together, destroyed, because of a negative threads, trolls, etc.

If we can just refocus the energy, in a way that allows us to feel better control, and participate in something that truly has meaning for us and others, then let's head that way

I agree, there used to be limits, such as when there was Godzala threads, anybody remember?

It should be the same with personal issues threads. If one feels the need to continue on with the topic days or weeks later, they should simply bump the original thread.
That would be much more efficient, IMHO.

LEXX,

I don't think you handled it incorrectly, as I could pick up on your frustration way before you got to the last straw there...

I think the problem was that the other person could not even SEE or FEEL the irritation, or simply did not CARE to honor those signals, and then turned it into a matter of being personally attacked.

There was no winning there, LEXX.

Again, I know it's not easy, but I think just reclaiming territory and adding something to the environment that's meaty and of substance makes me feel a LOT better.
