That same guy who had the NDE as a child that I mentioned above told me of another incident. When he was 14 he was at a water park where he'd been playing at for hours when he found himself in a pool that would generate artificial waves at times. He was caught off guard when the waves started and he was in the middle (the pool was huge) and surrounded by others and found himself too weak and realized he was going to drown, he was even too tired to cry for help (at least loud enough to be heard over all the noise). Just as he was giving up he heard someone shouting at him and saw a "Nordic type" yelling at him and he assumed it was a lifeguard who was demanding he come to him very authoritatively. The voice was so commanding (and he was still a boy) that he instinctively did so though it took every ounce of strength he had. Once he got to the edge of the pool the yelling stopped and when he looked up the man was gone, nowhere to be seen. To this day (well, when he told me about it over 10 years ago) he has no idea who, or what, that was. Of course if people are helped by friendly spirits it begs the question why are only some helped and others not? (Perhaps in that guy's case his having a NDE years before made him more open to spirits like that in the right circumstances whereas if he hadn't had that NDE then maybe he'd have perceived nothing and drowned. He'd seen other spirits as well, at least when he was still a child, so assuming he was saved by a friendly spirit then maybe that's why he got helped when many others don't.) IP: Logged |

I hav'nt had one, but remember my mother telling me about hers. When she was 14 her appendix burst, she saw herself in the hospital bed as she floated above, she heard a unfamiliar male voice say "go back it's not your time" she felt that we all have a number. Anyway she had 3 kids and died at age 60.IP: Logged |

I LOVE stories of near-death experiences!! I read them a lot, and even in this thread..there is a common thing that happens..going to a place of love, comfort, security, and/or being "called back". It is sooo common among NDE that it MUST mean something. We ARE a part of something much, much larger. When my dad was 20, he was nearly killed in a motorcycle accident. He won't really talk about his experience at all..but on the 30th anniversary of the accident he told me, "Welp, 30 years ago today I was re-born." Death is something that has always captivated me, and I am not lying when I say I am not afraid to die. I am afraid of HOW I might die, lol...but death itself I think will be a warm, inviting, relieving experience.

Blessed really Aquacheeka, that experience has given me a different perspective on life. I see those pics and it IS like "I easily could be gone" then "if you made it through that, then what can you possibly be afraid of now, you have been through much worse so be yourself and live your life".

That is close to my experience, if one can imagine what it feels like to be in a warm cacoon and relaxed and comfortable then getting out of it to return to the cold floor simply b/c it seemed like the thing to do, then it is like what it was like. Weirdest thing was being in a coma and having people enter your room and talk to you like you were sleeping, but one was hearing every word they were saying!

kinda short but when i was 16 my brother strangled me near to death because i was being an a**hole and tried to be funny by using one of his clean tanktops as a cape to keep hair off of my shirt when he was giving me a shave. needless to say he used the tank top by taking the whole thing and twisting it while it hung around my neck. i thought it was hilarious until i blacked out. when i came to he was freaking out because i had stopped breathing. i didnt know i was out for 10 minutes until later when my cousin told me. all i remember is darkness. cold darkness.IP: Logged |

Ami, I thought you might like this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW_dxq-KaME Seven minute video about a neurosurgeon/ atheist who had an NDE and went to some kind of hell and then heaven. *Really cool* twist at the end.

If you want to read about these for hours, here's a site that is full of near death experiences . What makes it interesting is that you can read about people of all differing religions and beliefs (or a lack thereof) and how their experiences were the same, and also different, from one another. http://www.near-death.com Cool site

^ Mockingbird, I just re-read your story and wonder why I didn't ask this the first time: can you tell us a bit more about how it changed you from being an atheist? Hope I'm not asking that in the wrong forum... IP: Logged |

I'll have to draft it out / think about how I want to articulate it. So much from that experience is difficult to put into words, even more so now that it's becoming more remote.IP: Logged |

It's not something I can quantify, but I'll try to put down some probably pretty nonsensical explanations.* When it happened I didn't feel at all like the "me" that I am now, but felt like ME - like the "me" that I really am. It felt right. * The Agape Love that I referenced...I just knew it to be God and to be the fabric of reality and to be my essence all at once. So much of the time I forget that, but when I sit and consciously remember it, even the echo of it fills me in the most pleasant, expansive way. * Interwoven with all of the above: during that time everything made sense. I could see the interconnectedness (though that's a weak word for it - Oneness is closer, but is not exactly what I mean as there are individualities and wills contained within...I am me, but I am also a part of everything). It's not that I could see across time and space, it's that they simply weren't. I mean, they are in that they're necessary for this reality, but they're just "not" in a way that matters more. * I felt bad for the body that I saw tumbling around and being injured, but that's it. "Poor body." But I knew that it wasn't me. It was like looking at your car crashing if you could somehow transport out of your car as the accident gets really serious. Mostly, though, it was the Love. That's what's real. That's what Is. I'm sorry if none of that makes sense. I don't have the words, not really. Even what's written is only an approximation. Thank you, mockingbird! So it wasn't like you saw God (bearded dude) or anything? More like, your atheism was replaced with a belief in a kind of afterlife, universal love?I get concerned when people say they met Jesus on the Other Side. Because I am banking on the fact that the salvation scheme of Christianity is wrong. So I was hoping you didn't see Him. IP: Logged |
