And that's precisely the crux of the issue. Have a career and money. Who cares about love relationships? My dad's attitude was "be careful with the girls out there," meaning "don't you get one of them pregnant, and here, share my box of love gloves," which I did liberally. Imagine knowing your dad buying boxes of a 1,000 each, but never having sex with your mom, ever?

Ian, one thing you cleared up for me is the link between soldiers and prostitution. That testosterone increases when you are out there being aggressive in general...why did that never occur to me?

So we hear of Nazi soldiers having a...*fumbles around for euphemism*...good time, sexually, while killing people.

That's the extreme. Prostitution looks minor compared to that. I guess the difficult question I want to ask you is, what's the solution?

I wouldn't want to be a military wife having my husband take everything out on me; I wouldn't want him sleeping around abroad either.

This is the kind of situation where *self-care* seems the most moral, healthful release possible. OR people can just stay out of the military.

In the military, self release is absolutely necessary, especially if you are stuck on an aircraft carrier or submarine for 3 months without seeing land.

Imagine the female submarine officers now?

The combat vocations are subject to tremendous stresses. During combat, there isn't time to ponder about frivolities like sex. Staying alive and completing the mission is all you think about.

My military experience was fully training only and I've never seen any combat. However, some of my training was conducted in interesting places like Taiwan and Thailand. What do you think soldiers do when on R and R?

Just my my brother and his stupid vacation to Amsterdam with his silly friends during his college years. I'm sure the museums in Amsterdam are most educational and he went there for the music and culture.

It takes an extremely special breed of woman to be the wife of a special forces soldier. Imagine your husband being away for six months at a time, returning for a few days and leaving for 14 months. All this time, you have no idea where he is or what he is doing, or when that dreaded black government car will pull up to your driveway to inform you that your husband was an honorable man who served his country well, and that you'll see him one last time in 3 days in a metal box?

What love?

From his perspective: you've finished university. when am I going to have grandsons? (only boys are lucky.. and the fatter the better). why don't you clean yourself up and dress better. that girl over there, she may not like you but she needs to get married soon because she's going to be damaged goods.

From her perspective: you've finished university. when am I going to have grandkids. That guy there may be a dork and maybe not the greatest looking, but he has a good job. what's wrong with him? go go.. say yes.. go get married.

And so... one year later, I arrive

Come on, we're of a different age. My parents were back in the late 50s/early 60s.

The only love back then was hippie free love in the US. Over in the home country, it was repression and zero love.

People got married out of economic necessity.

Be assured that even though I'm here and you are there, and even though I'm very unavailable, what flows from me to you is true, wholesome and old fashioned.

YTA,

After reading your post I am even less in favor of a standing military and preemptive wars than I was before.

But my heart goes out to the people caught in a bad situation.
