Hey all,I've been looking at different forms of birth control, so I'm ready when that moment comes. I don't really have a venue to ask this question, so I figured I'd post here I'm not really into pumping hormones into my body, especially with the side effects. And, I'm a Taurus, so condoms wouldn't always be used, lol. This would all be in the context of a monogamous relationship, btw. I know there's gonna have to be some sacrifice too. Anyways, what do you all use with your partners and what has been your experience with it? IP: Logged |

I liked the Patch for its efficiency and for the lack of forethought needed, but the hormonal side-effects were progressively worse over time. For sheer lack of side-effects, the Nuva Ring was amazing, but due to vigorous, ahem, "fun", it kept coming out and if is out of your body more than an hour or two, you have to put a whole new one in, and they are not cheap, about 25-30 bucks a pop. One is required per month so not cost-prohibitive, IF they stay in. We ended up using condoms for the time after I gave up on the Patch, and I hated the risk, so it inhibited my mood. IP: Logged |

I use condoms & avoid intimacy during estimated fertile period. In the past I tried birth control pills & the patch, and both brought horrible headaches, weight gain, and mood swings. Dislike the idea of ingesting hormones & chemicals w bad side effects. Condoms when used correctly offer high rate of disease & pregnancy prevention. I also wish for better birth control and that obtaining sterilization be made easier for both males & females. IP: Logged |

Well, I don't use any with my husband. But I guess if I didn't want to use condoms and didn't want to take anything hormonal then I'd consider a diaphram, sponge and cycle planning to avoid sex during the most fertile time. IP: Logged |

Nothing. My wife and I don't use anything. I rather not have sex than use condoms. And the hormonal effects of pills are highly undesirable. IP: Logged |

My wee wee swelled up and was unfunctional for one month because of a stupid condom! I nearly lost my wee wee. We are highly fertile as well. Just that we know what we are doing. IP: Logged |

Hey, thanks for the responses, everyone.Yeah, I was getting increasingly frustrated as I was looking into birth control options. It's like most will cause moodiness, weight gain, or kill your libido, which practically renders it useless. IUD's seem alright, but in no way could that be my first method to ever use. I definitely understand the frustration with the limitations you guys expressed. Surely, they're working on something better! For those who don't use anything, you pull out then, I'm assuming? This seems preferable, but I'm a bit high-strung and would worry about any accidents. quote: Originally posted by YoursTrulyAlways: My wee wee swelled up and was unfunctional for one month because of a stupid condom! Wow, I'm sorry about that. It would've been a tragedy, lol! IP: Logged |

A diaphram won't cause any of the above negative side effects. Add that with charting your cycles (presuming they are regular), avoiding your fertile time, and you likely won't run into a problem. btw - don't trust the pull out method. Pre-*** can get you pregnant. IP: Logged |

I'm very content with my mini Gynefix copper spiral. No hormones! It's very small and doesn't have that traditional T-frame which makes it very suitable for young women, women who haven't give birth yet or women who otherwise have problems with cramping and increased blood loss with traditional spirals. It's a real pain to have it put in though.IP: Logged |

Well, I went though decades without condoms. I am allergic, period. I've been having sex longer than most of you have been alive.I much rather not have sex at all if I have to use a condom. As far as I know, all the children I have are accounted for in this household. I know what I am doing. I can easily fill a regular college lecture room with my partners prior to my wife, and some would have to stand at the back. And I'm not putting any pills into my body, and certainly not putting any pills into my wife's body. It's an added risk of cancer ina woman with a family history of estrogen-related cancer. The sure fire way to be risk free is simple. Abstinence. Our baby making abilities are coming to an end anyway, so the whole issue for me is moot. IP: Logged |

I ask because Paragard has no hormones, but from what I've heard/read from women who have used it, it does have some nasty side effects for some women. The other thing to know about Paragard is that there is a discrepancy between how long Planned Parenthood and Paragard say you can leave it in. PP says 12 years; Paragard says 10. I'm not sure why this is the case. Gynefix isn't available in the US, to my understanding; highly doubt that will ever possibly change.
Oh I don't mind answering at all. I don't have any side effects. A friend of mine has epilepsia and due to her medication isn't allowed to take hormonal contraception, she doesn't seem to have any side effects of the spiral either. Everyone is different though, I've read not so positive experiences too. Downside; it can only stay for 5 years. Tbh I don't think I dare to have it inserted for a second time because insertion was so painful. Maybe with general anesthesia. It was only 20-30 seconds but still ... I suppose I have a very low pain limit because according to some women it was bearable. I think if the 5 years are over I'll try Nuvaring. It's hormonal but localised and in much smaller doses. Wow I had never heard of this until you posted.. It's really unfortunate that it isn't available in the U.S. That's frustrating. I share a lot of the same concerns as you guys.. I won't take hormonal birth control because of the side effects and would prefer to not use condoms in a monogamous committed relationship. Right now that really isn't an issue lol but I know I'll have to figure something out eventually, and I was actually strongly considering getting Paraguard since it is hormone free and effective for a long time and I don't want kids annny time soon. But I feel this is a drastic step to take since I've never been pregnant, I know it's a very painful procedure, and there's an increased risk of infertility in those who have never given birth since there's a greater risk of complications. Also, there very well may be a male birth control pill sometime in the near future I've heard that it might already be developed but hasn't been put on the market yet because they are concerned men won't go for it... (that is just heresay though lol) http://theweek.com/article/index/232186/a-male-birth-control-pill-that-doesnt-kill -sex-drive
