I love a good rom-com. Especially the old school ones, and I've noticed how different they were in the last decades: ----- 80's: Love was exciting, colorful, coming of age, sexual, stylish, wild, brazen, and...a bit whimsical..PREDICTABLE."Pretty in Pink" "Short Circut" "Working Girl" Actually, John Hughges film... ----- 90's: Moody, shallow, dark, conservative, bland, sensual, suspenseful, studious, dangerous, tempermental, beautiful, cultural, mixed. "Boomerang" "The Prince of Tides" "Mi vida loca" ------ 00's: Tacky (lol), predictable, technological, sexual, hot, manic, shocking, adventrous, sweet, noble, lots of happy endings, feminine, brash, wonderful, crappy, fickle. "hackers" "love actually" "gia" "New Years Eve" Anybody else notice this??? IP: Logged |

Sounds like they reflect their decade (and the boomers who made up the target audience) well. IP: Logged |

I don't know what movies you're watching... I've only seen gia out of your 00 list and that is hardly a love story.I grant pretty in pink to the 80's.. The 90's can't be talked about without mentioning titanic. 00's..... There was avatar. IP: Logged |

Gia... You think gia is a romantic movie? Forget the comedy... The movie came out in the 90's & she's a heroin addict... Am i missing something? Is there another gia that i might not know about? IP: Logged |

^^ I never saw Gia so you'd have to ask bella_taurus about that. And I know I'm confused by how so many books and movies are classified. I even stopped watching a lot of comedies because they were so depressing (but apparently if it has comedic moments or starts off funny before getting super depressing then it's a "comedy"). It really ticks me off when I rent a comedy only to be devastated (or even just depressed) at the end, pretty much like I'd be ticked if I took a caffeine pill only to have it make me sleepy. But as far as I can tell whoever classifies these things often just give it a glance before labeling it. The most extreme example I heard of was a librarian who originally labelled Bridges of Madison County as architecture to be put in nonfiction. IP: Logged |

Yeah, Gia came out in the late 90's, without the rom-com label. Also, Hackers was another Angelina Jolie movie way before Gia that was not a romantic comedy... it did have some romance near the end and slight humor throughout, but it was definitely not a rom-com. IP: Logged |

^^I have seen Hackers and would agree it's not a rom-com...but I didn't say anything because I thought it fit the description for the '00s well anyway with the sole exception of it not being very feminine (unless you count that guy dreaming of wearing a dress ). Again, those seem roughly to describe many movies of the time, though I can think of exceptions (for example, Clueless in 95). IP: Logged |
