Perhaps it is due to the winter and the depression it can cause, however out of curiosity.

What in someones' chart would indicate a drive to being really hard on themselves?

A sort of "I can't do anything right" or "I can't belive I did that, I'm an awful person"

From my limited experience, Virgos are really really hard on themselves, but that is more of a sun sign thing.

Suspect this is more an Earth sign trait, but that is just a guess

My guess is Scorp/Pisces because the advice I get from most people is "Don't be so hard on yourself."
My mind and heart do not work together. When I make a mistake I can easily say it's not a big deal (sag mercury) but I just get so overwhelmed by the situation that you can see it all over my face (pisces moon/asc), and the feeling haunts me for days.

Somewhat sociological and psychological.

Irish Catholics are extremely over critical of themselves and their "worthiness". Catholicism in itself breeds a lot of fear of inadequacy, shame and guilt feelings. Strange how it works.

I have Sun, Mercury, and Venus all square Saturn plus my Moon in Taurus is trine Saturn. I'm very, very critical of myself. It's hard for me to not feel guilty and ashamed for mistakes at work even if I'm new and don't have the hang of things yet.

Suspect one is joking, but ime..yep..

Aquarius's as well, but in a different way, instead of showing it outwardly such self blame tends to go right inside their heads and stay there for a long long time

Saggie sun, so for me, I don't "get it" which is why I ask

I think I own the franchise on that lol

Not only am I dissatisfied with 98 on a test, I want to not only score 100 but also max out the extra credit.

I am my own harshest critic.

Cappies/Virgos and..Taurus..just wow, it is either 100% correct or "I need to do better!"

For me, being mostly fire, what happens is "you are not trying hard enough"

Which means..complete obsession or do not bother with it.

IE, if one trip up the mtn is good, 3 would be better, and let's do it at night, in 19 degree weather..this matters to you right?

Then go all in.

Right now though, I've just seen people who do go all in, fail, and have no self forgiveness mechanism to their thinking.

Then again, have to go back to Aquarius b/c for them, it is "well I did everything perfectly, the best I could do, it didn't work so I must be worthless"

I've had Aquarius friends who remember not winning a spelling bee in 3rd grade, and just seriously obsess over losing.

Bah... Win a spelling bee? My kid came in second in the State championships. Didn't get to the Nationals. Even then, it still wouldn't have been agreeable unless the Scripts Nationals were won. And he's an Aquarius.

hmm..why am I not surprised?

Good on you to bring it up though, that is an achievement for your son, even though he did not take the title he still has a good bearing for where he stands.

Virgos can be very critical of themselves because they seek perfectionism. Someone who has a strong saturn or capricorn influence in their chart can be hard on themselves too, because they want to succeed so badly.

I don't think it's astrological. to what ghani said.

I grew up with a Cappie dad and an Aries mom. Nothing was ever good enough for them. They were harsh on themselves AND on their kids. I hated it. I still haven't learned how to relax and be happy with what I have.

Right. I was raised in a strict Irish Catholic home. Last night I was reading about Scientology and how they dig into your mind with their constant lie detector tests (auditing.) I thought, "That reminds me of my childhood," because there was the assumption that the priests were entitled to know your thoughts (confession) and if you withheld information, you could go to hell.

And basically you can do nothing right by them. All natural inclinations are branded abhorrent.

As for astrology...I've seen all kinds of people being really hard on themselves.

I think Capricorn is the hardest on themselves. I try not to be, but I'm probably the most optimistic Capricorn I know.

My little sister is a Capricorn with Cap ASC and Cap mercury and one time she tried to kill herself because she messed up the breakfast she was making for my family. No joke. She can be pretty ridiculous.

Wow..hopefully she found a way to forgive herself?

Goodness, it's just breakfast, that is probably one of the most extreme things I've heard..I'm a bit taken aback by it.

Cappies I've known were perfectionists, however ime it is more when they fail, they really really grind on whatever it is.

Hmm, do you suppose there is something in her chart that would have pointed to her doing that?

Which signs are hardest on themselves?
Well first off I am referring to people I know offline;
not any folks here.

Which signs are hardest on themselves?
I think Cancers are,
at least in the sadly often self loathing, self depreciation arena.
That is not constructive self criticism.
I feel Capricorns are hard on themselves but it is the being hard on others to the point
of cruelty and intolerance.
In my personal experience it went all they way to demeaning uncalled for abuse.
It took me a long time to learn to love myself and accept myself because of the decades of being stomped on by a Capricorn.
The more the Capricorn is a perfectionist;
the more they expect often unreasonable results from others.
Again I am talking about folks in my offline life, so please Capricorns here do not get offended at me.
The other thing I do not like about Capricorns I have known well in my offline life,
is that when one does perfect it is rarely if ever praised or noticed.
Or worse, if one does better than the Capricorn, the Capricorn will work hard to find something to criticize even if it is totally unrelated to the thing done perfectly.
They always find fault.
Many I have known suffered heart attacks in their 20s with their OTT type A personalities.

I am far from perfect but I try and do my best.
I ask myself;
"did I do my best?"
One can only do their best,
and best can vary depending on health, circumstances and so forth.
Doing ones best cannot always be measured by
what one is capable of.
It means doing your best under many different circumstances in play at the moment.
Scorpio sun
Aqua moon
Capricorn Asc.

My dad made me start the violin at three years old!! Mozart started at four years old. How lame!! His son must do better than Mozart!!! He hired the Concertmaster of the National Symphony Orchestra to teach his three year old son. I think I got all of you beat on the parental pressure lol.
