That's kinda like your "elegance vs. sexy" question, it's very difficult to separate one from the other and I wonder why anyone would try. While it's interesting mental masturbation, life is made up of Tao-like forces that continually blend into each other, sometimes to the point of seeming paradox (seeming paradoxical only because we were often raised on Aristotelian concepts he shared in his book on metaphysics and have subtly been absorbed by our linguistics and thus way we see the world).

I'd say I'd believe in it as defined by Frederick Douglas (who acknowledged the importance of relationships and the need to give if you want to get), because as the saying goes life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react. People and impersonal society both help & hinder but it's ultimately up to the individual to use the cards they've been dealt and navigate the circumstances around them like a surfer riding a wave trying not to wipeout (or at least wipe out in a way, perhaps by jumping before you do, so that you can catch the next wave without missing a beat). Those who take the path of least resistance don't make themselves (not even if they inherit some legacy), it's the people who rise above their circumstances that make themselves. As one sign goes, "Winners are simply willing to do what losers won't." (I could add a lot of disclaimers to that statement but I don't want to muddy this.)
