Do you think this video is racist?
I've been hearing this from the indian community.
I personally think it's a nice depiction of indian culture from a westerners point of view. She probably genuinely likes the culture and its aesthetic.
Besides its not really offensive visually, and it's no different than Bollywood.
Also in the Hinduism they encourage and celebration at temples. She's not even dressed scantly clade for indian standards
I think they only reason they're offended is because she's white, isn't that racist? lol..

I wonder where starfairy is?.. I miss her..
My other indian friend likes the video too.
I think she makes the culture look badass from a westerners point.
but I like iggy personally, our suns conjunct lol, not really into rap music thou..

I'm not sure about racist, but it would be considered ignorant/offensive if the culture was reduced to a crutch for entertainment (which is a big facet of Western culture). I think the Indian community would be offended because this woman who isn't of their descent nor shows any signs of being from the community or religion is using their culture's aesthetic in a rap video. She sings about money, intoxication, and makes allusions to sexual behaviour - and I don't think these things are celebrated in Hinduism.

I haven't really formed an opinion on it, but those are some other things to consider when trying to discern if the video is racist, ignorant, or if the Indian community is justified in being offended.

It is ignorant. That's what it is.

No different from Indian based movies such as Slum Dog Millionaire and Life of Pi. Hey, whatever. If you can sell a crock of sh1t to the west for big bucks so that Indisn folks can get rich, why not do so.

I too get annoyed by the stereotypical sh1t that befalls my culture. But if you want to be a sucker and make me rich, feel free to call me Flying Dragon or Crouching Tiger.

These bozos are just Sala Gandus and Magar Chods (sorry i dated an Indian girl with quite a mouth lol). Ignore them.

what happened to Starfairy? I haven't seen her for awhile now.

I don't find any correlation with the lyrics of this song to Indian culture! There isn't even a western point of view in this vid!

Worshiping of a Shiva Lingam is sacred,as god worshiping in a church or a mosque. This part is offensive.I agree that it's no different from Bollywood though. I don't find it racist, I find it inconsiderate and stupid as lots of Bollywood movies. If the Indian community is raising hell because of this Vid, it's because they are a bunch of hypocrites!

It isn't a nice depiction of the Indian culture IMHO,since the lyrics suck, not as much as the visuals though( except for the part in the temple)

I know I hope she's okaayyy.... =C I'm a bit worried.

Yeah I don't find it ignorant because I totally think Iggy was going for the bollywood style.
Maybe it was offensive performing at a the temples but musicians invade places of worship for their art all the time lol.

Bollywood totally will suck the culture dry and often creates a vapid story with bad acting.

Anyways Unlike western culture religion my interpretation on Hinduism is that its very liberating. It is a celebration of life. Which is why I love Hinduism. We have freaking Yakshi on ancient temples
My grandmother says this weird conservatism came in when the English came and spread christianity around and their values around.
It makes sense to me.
I showed it my mom and aunt because I wanted there opinion, they it looks fine and she dressed traditionally too. They were skeptical about the lyrics, I assured them know one understands rap. lol

Exactly.

What I find really OFFENSIVE is when Indian artists/ musicians use places of worship disrespectfully, because THEY were supposed to know better.

In this vid, she shown a pundit drinking 'bang' and a Shiva Lingam. That's the only thing that I found personally offensive, although I have seen shocking pictures of Shiva shooting himself up on Facebook, that much shared by Indian folks.

That's why am telling you, the indian community is just a bunch of hypocrites!
