Someone who succeeds while playing by the rules.

Someone who succeeds despite crippling disadvantages.

Someone who makes a comeback.

Someone that is self-actualized.

Someone that lifts up other people.

Someone that does what needs to be done because they see the need, not because they want to get credit for it.

Someone that makes a difference, or makes a positive contribution to the world.

One of my neighbors was picking up other people's trash in the alley behind our house, and putting it into a waste bin. He's a winner.

I stopped on the side of the road to help someone who had a flat tire. She didn't have a jack or a lug wrench, and the tools in my car didn't fit. I bought new tools from a nearby store, brought them back, put on the spare from her trunk, and gave her the tools. I'm a winner. A small one. I'm a moron, too, because I didn't ask for her number, but that's no what this thread is about.

Blackbird, your list is a winner!!

Some one who is always standing by in the wings to encourage others despite their handicaps and hardships.

Happy people. I don't mean the perky ones who fold at the slightest hint of stress - I mean people who are mostly content.

That was my first thought, but the rest run along the lines of those posted.

Interesting, teasel.

Compared with your view, I seem to define a winner by their accomplishments.

This is not a judgment, merely an observation.

I'm a guy. Is "accomplishments = winner" a male gender stereotype?

"Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
And all the clouds that lour'd upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried."

- pardon me if I got the Richard III quote wrong in any way. College was a long time ago.

So, a guy who is never contented is definitely not a winner?

Count me in. I'm never satisfied with good enough. The best is yet to come!

I will check it in a while, Juni. I just reloaded this thread, because I was expecting someone to take issue with what I said. But I want to get back to my movie, and I have cleaning up to do while I'm watching it (online). I don't have the motivation anymore, but I need to try to do something, because it's awful in here, and I just need to make it nicer. I wanted to for Emily, when she was sleeping on things on the floor, and then she died.

People can be happy, and still go on to accomplish more, YoursTruly. I was happy when I came out of Home Depot with paint samples - it's potential, making something better.

There are people who win who aren't what I would classify as winners. Bad losers tend to also be bad winners. A winner to me is someone who doesn't ever give up. If you never give up, you can't lose. You make mistakes, try things that don't work, regroup, pick yourself back up, learn, grow, and try again. And when a true winner is finally successful, that winner is both humble and gracious--not boastful or prideful. That's a winner in my book. And they are rare. I will end with one of my fave quotes by Thomas Edison: "The most certain way to succeed is to try one more time." He should know; he failed over 1,000 times before he figured out how to make the light bulb work. We should be careful of who we judge by appearance or by what seems to be failure. Behind that facade of failure could be a winner in training.

Well I'm seldom ever happy with myself and I'm especially unhappy with all others, then I exclude myself from your definition. Everyone falls way short of expectations, especially myself. I always strive ever harder for higher achievement, and people who don't achieve annoy and disappoint me.

Defining a winner is to define a diverse title...

A person who is happy and content with themselves or their achievements, even if they've lost in the competition sense, is a winner. A person who doesn't need to resort to unethical practises to derive satisfaction.

Plain and simple.

A winner is someone who recgonizes the game of life, plays it by their own rules, and is content and even happy with the outcome.

You're lucky teasel

I stay really strong, for a long time. Then there's a "spot" in me, and I fold up almost EVERY time. It's my Achilles heel... It has to do with the trickery and betrayal of others. People who "use" you, then DUMP you and go laugh at you with all their "friends"... (How devastating)

You're lucky to be such a "winner"....

yep, I'm "that loser" you referred to. The one that's 'Perky' and dangling while holding on to broken floor-boards---, while you stomp on my fingers.

What a shock to find this out about you! I felt so sorry for you and got sucked into it... Fair weather, hmmmm? Wow! I got sucked in...... AGAIN!

But that will be one of the last times it happens. ..... that's just plain 'wrong'
