I'd guess that many of those street vendors are poor. They live a hard life and want to make money. This isn't an excuse, but in many circumstances, if one is poor/hungry enough one would be more likely to do... well..a lot of things.

Poverty, and a lack of general understanding about animal cruelty. Lack of empathy...

According to some of these articles, there are many reasons why animal cruelty is prevalent, one of which is because there isn't a "clear" law that protects animal welfare. There are laws to protect wild, endangered animals, but in this case, fish and turtles are not ...so yeah.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/michaeltobias/2012/11/02/animal-rights-in-china/

Even human rights record is poor, let alone animal rights.

Some of the people I know (they're from China) said that in China now this is illegal and only a small number of people actually do this stuff.

We've been monsters for a long long time.

We have the capacity to create unspeakable beauty.

And the capacity for unspeakable wrong.

Since the Dawn of time, we have always looked for new ways to kill. I feel it is truly saddening, that the most advanced technology that exists in the world, was created with a mind to take life away.

The worst people are the ones who deny it. They will be behind the future horrors.I can't help but hate them, although I know I should not.

That is life in China.

Get your pious American goody selves and get a grip on practical reality.

Swift Freeze, where ever you are, posting a pic of Hiroshima on Veterans Day in the US is at minimum bad taste, and if you are American, then F you very much because folks sacrificed their lives such that you enjoy the liberties of blasting them.

Please it's not just the Chinese this happens in america too

lol China is soooo poor right..
I've lived in poverty stricken India and I've never seen **** like this sold by vendors...
As a society, despite how they treat other humans they actually respect innocent lives.
I just hope that India does not turn into China...

It's not the people it's the government for allowing this.
If you're really disgusted than there's petition in that link I gave.

I'm so numb when it comes to humans harming other humans... It happens all the time.
emotionally, physically.
We see it everyday.
Humans are destructive.

but I always feel sick to my stomach when it comes to animal cruelty.

But eating foie gras and calf brains in France is perfectly civilized. Correct?

I'll venture that I've been through more of India than you've been through China. Stop picking on a culture that is not yours and don't appreciate.

It is World remembrance day, to remember all those who have fallen.
Those who gave their lives in combat, and those who did not. Men and Women in arms, and those civilians who stood no chance.
It is an image that showcases the horror of what we as human beings can unleash on our brothers and sisters, and I hope no one ever forgets just how horrific war can be.

No offence was intended.

If you take offence and feel that those who died in Hiroshima do not deserve to be remembered, then I have no words for you.

It indeed is a tragedy but focus for a moment on how the tragedy began and what were the causes behind the action.

Of course you don't memorialize the four million innocent civilians that were slaughtered by the aggressors across Asia senselessly, far exceeding the number dead in Hiroshima by a factor of a thousand.

Look at the forest befallen. Not the leaves falling. You rather conveniently pick on the atomic technology. I have no other words for you.

I'm not that surprised given how people will treat their own children when given the green light by the government.

What I'm curious about is how is this marketed in China? As a charm (for example, having a live turtle key ring keeps you safe while out of your home as the energy of the turtle shell now protects you)? Fashion statement either expressing money to burn (as it's so expensive) or daring individuality (or so it's sold as)? Or what?

I can't imagine that they sell because they're somehow cheaper.

I can kinda "guess" and "get" why the sellers do that since I've seen and heard people doing worse things to each other (either coz poverty or just simply an easy way to get money coz they can and can get away with it).

What I don't "get" is why the buyers think it's cool to hang death on their keys or around their necks. That kind of indifference is even more cruel than the Government or the sellers.

PixieJane, they are sold for around $1.50 -->

hang the key ring, containing a turtle, on the wall in his office.

Oh people do much worse to each other.

But that's besides the point.

This is still disgusting in itself.

Explanations and excuses don't make it less disgusting.
That's just giving an answer to the *why*.

For sure. The title is "I don't understand humans" so I am giving an answer - or rather what I think is the possible explanation to "Why".

I know that some people can/and probably will do worse things to each other, so I kind "get" it coz even humans' well-being aren't so very highly-valued in some cases, it's not hard to imagine that to some, animals are nothing. How is that besides the point?

I hope you're not suggesting that I'm giving excuses trying to make it less disgusting. Coz if it is the case, I'll tell you that it is gross to assume that my answer aims to make light of the situation and/or just because I haven't cried out "gross" and "disgusting" in Capslock, I'm somehow "trying to make excuses".

Heh well I'm not the one bringing up China...
There is no excuse for this, regardless of the "culture".

I was telling my Chinese friend how I found a cute snapping turtle under a train rail so I just picked it up and took it back to the beach and missed my train, She told me how she would see these live turtle charms outside a subway entrance near her school.
so I did some research.

She went on to say people don't nessarily buy these things but they ignore them.. and pretend it's not happening. It's not mainstream, and mostly looked down upon because most people like animals LOL.. but some vendors are still insisting on making it a fashion trend. According to her the problem with the culture is avoidance.
While in other countries people would have a riot, not saying china is a horrible place but the citizens are terrified...
It's unfortunate.
