I don't care if you think it's trite (and I'm definitely not interested in hearing your dismal remarks about it if you do, so there...pfffthhp).

Made me tear up a little.

Wait...I can't figure out if this a commercial at the end. If it is, I'm gonna be really annoyed. And embarrassed.

Maybe trite isn't the right word, but it did annoy me. Why? Because I've been like that guy before and I got crap for it, not a bunch of love and gratitude, and while I kept things from getting worse (I know by visiting one neighborhood I used to live in months after I'd left it, it was one big mess) I can't say I made it all that great a place to live. While I did generate some gratitude that helped me at times, in fact a few which makes all the crap I've endured worth it, most just saw me as a sap and took advantage of me (even leaving anonymous notes on my door where to clean some mess up), or were even hostile toward me either looking for my ulterior motive or thinking I was doing more harm than good (like when I left food for the homeless, thinking of runaways, a guy grabbed it--it was a lot--and started to take it to the trash and I told him it was for the homeless only to have him yell at me as he shoved it in the trash that I was feeding illegal aliens stealing jobs).

After sweeping up a lot of glass by a park I left a polite note pointing out the animals (who can lick it off their paws), children in the park, people on bikes and skateboarders and please be careful with the glass and the next time I went by the note had been defaced--with so much more broken glass around the park, mostly right by my note, that took me several minutes to clean up (I also took down the note and never put another one up). I can share other similar experiences as well.

Try living as that guy did and see for yourself. (Granted, it might be different in Thailand.)

I'm not saying everyone will spit on you, but genuine gratitude or seeing a better world (or even neighborhood) is pretty elusive. By all means do as he did, or as I did, but don't expect your life to become one big shining blessing because of it. (Btw, some predators also target do-gooders, too, so be careful if you try this, especially in a city.)

I don't think it's a bad video, even if it's for life insurance.

Although, Pixie is correct about people not really respecting you for doing it.

I can't stand trash on the ground and I like walking to get my groceries so I'll put any trash in a compartment of my bag that I don't use for anything else. Usually that street is pretty dead but one day a woman was walking behind me with her groceries and saw me picking up the trash. She gave me a look like I was defective and she should get away quick before I attack her or something.

It's a great thing to do but do it for your own self. If you expect anything from it, you'll be disappointed a lot.

@ PJ and MsPrism, I hear ya, ladies.

No, I don't expect anything for taking a minute to talk to homeless drug addicts/mentally ill people like they're human beings, or even giving them my spare change, a cigarette, or my leftovers or whatever. Or for picking up litter around the woods where I live.

I do all of those things, and yes I get disdainful looks.
I had one homeless person who I was giving my pocket change to ask me in a very pushy fashion "Do you have five dollars? C'mon, do you have five??"
And of course I was like "Um, no. Eff off and get out of my face."

But there have been times when I've broken up a fight between two homeless, mentally ill guys and then called 911 because one guy was clearly off his meds and was violent; sometimes when I've been at a show or something I've gone out to smoke a cigarette and didn't mind talking to some drunk homeless person sitting on the curb. I sat down with them and gave them a smoke, had people look at me like I was dirt, and then went back in and enjoy the music that I paid to hear.

So yeah, I get what you're both saying for sure.
I think that if we expect recognition or rewards it probably defeats the purpose.

And of course be careful about who you give to, because people will take advantage. I listen to my intuition (and common sense) with that one, and it generally doesn't fail.

It just makes me feel better to treat people like humans when other people don't, and to treat the Earth with love and respect when I can (although I'm not perfect...I could be a little less lazy with my compost bin, and I could have a healthier "live and let live" attitude towards the ants and hobo spiders in my back yard, although I don't use harmful pesticides or anything).

If it inspires similar behavior, then good. I just hope they don't get misled by it which could lead to disillusionment.

And I recall right after Obama won, there was some volunteer campaign, and people I knew, a few who considered me a sap, were suddenly saying they were involved and acting like it just occurred to them with commercials about helping and volunteering giving people the warm fuzzies. In some cases they refused to help around the community but bragged about helping other organizations. At first it both bemused and annoyed me that they couldn't do anything like that until the government told them to (and before this I'd been told numerous times that they don't do things like pick up trash because they "pay taxes for that") but then a friend told me that some people need a shepherd to act and the important thing is that they ARE doing it. I agreed and just counted the blessing but within a couple of months the entire craze/fad had fizzled, in part because the government seemed to lose interest in it as well. Heck, plenty of people now don't even remember it.

Hope this video has better success.

Heh. I suppose people are either inclined towards it or they're not, maybe. Maybe it will plant a seed, maybe it won't... I liked it, though. Except that I didn't realize it was an effing commercial.
*facepalm*
