I don't think there is an acceptable number really. It's what feels acceptable to you. I've also been celibate for very long periods between sexual encounters, so I'm not a nympho or anything (also had 4 long relationships). As I've said many times on LL, I think people should be able to sleep with whomever they choose and have as many partners as they choose.
But that does not change the practical reality that many women are more sexually inhibited than men and seldom go against the grain or have over 3-5 sexual partners in their lifetime.

:edit:^^ I changed my mind about 'lifetime' here because Violets is right in saying the statistics are often not very reflective of different age groups, so it would be difficult to find out what the actual 'lifetime' numbers are :edit:

AG's idea that women have hundreds of options and the ability to take up those options without social repercussions is bordering on the delusional.

Hmmmm, I would think it would be a slightly higher number than that, unless you married fairly young and stayed with that person most of your life.

I think if one is religious too that would make a big difference, or maybe where you come from. I'm from Europe (perhaps we have a slightly more liberal attitude, I dunno) and am non-religious.

Of course, practising safe sex is important, no matter how few or many partners you have.

I'm 39 years old, but...

I don't think I personally know any women who have only had 4 partners in their lifetime (except for my cousin, who is religious, and my aunt, who is also religious).
