There are alot of people who see social media and technology as a convenient way for big brother to watch us and control us but recent events here in my town show that these things can actually give power back to the people. Recently some of the college students at UT were having parties to celebrate the end of semester finals and the cops were called into bust a party. While this was happening atleast one of the students used their cell phone camera to take pictures of an officer using excessive force. The pictures went viral on facebook and twitter and the news spread like wildfire and sparked public outrage and The Sheriff of Knox County, J.J Jones, fired the cop as a result of this. This just goes to show that social media can be a great thing. Cops in this town have a reputation for this sort of thing but I bet they will think twice about being bullies now. People need to start doing stuff like this more. Our Government needs to be afraid of us, not the other way around. http://www.wbir.com/story/news/local/downtown-ut/2014/04/27/kcso-investigating-photos-after-massive-ut-party-bust/8307013/ IP: Logged |
