Wondering what peoples thoughts on this are and if finding creative outlets has helped ease symptoms for you.IP: Logged |

Well, I have depression but not sure whether any other mental disorder. But, find either way all my thought channels link together very easily and this means a flooding of emotions/thoughts whether negative leading to depressive tendencies or this same flooding as good for creativity. If anything, all the dams I muster to contain it impede a free flowing approach. It helps me in very practical ways of distracting my thoughts and giving a sense of achievement and relief in expression. And some antidote to oppressive reality. But I rarely give over fully to the emotion that artists associated with mental disorders or addictions do. Yet. So not sure how much it can fully sweep up and carry off those problems - I do think potentially more but that almost means completely giving into those same problems. I did tell my dr that art is my medication. IP: Logged |

I love your writing, florence.Let me think... Any time I am down, probably the most creative thing I can do is clean, organize, and re-arrange my house. Buy new throw blankets or something. I create a new kind of space, and yes that is revitalizing. I tend to do Virgo-type things to settle my Gem-Pisces-Sag t-square. Also I shut my mind down and refuse to dwell on negative thoughts. I've gotten pretty good at that, thanks to my 6H Mercury. Unfortunately this means I don't write any more melodramatic, macabre, heart-wrenching poetry. LOL Sometimes instead of actually thinking about my troubles, I will doodle my emotions in a deliberate way, working from over-complexity (shading, twisted shapes, sharp points) to airiness (open space, clouds, subdued colors.) It's sorta like a free-form mandala process.

I have suffered from depression in the past and my outlet has usually been music performance (jazz, funk etc) and composing, and to a lesser extent, art. Unfortunately I have cubital tunnel syndrome in my left hand now which makes it very uncomfortable trying to play musical instruments, so I will probably get more into the art again. Writing poetry or anything where I put my feelings down on paper helps too. Sport or physical activity such as swimming and walking helps me a lot too - not necessarily creative I guess - but I find it really allows me to let off steam. Sometimes though I wonder whether the whole depression-create something cycle is just perpetuating itself. You do something to alleviate the depression, but it doesn't solve the root cause of the depression itself. IP: Logged |

Thanks Ami - not yet, I'm due for physiotherapy in February (only taken 5 months for the doctor to refer me.. grrr), but I don't think that will help tbh. I reckon I will need to have surgery on the nerve to move it (the compression is in the funny bone area in my elbow). It has got me down somewhat, it's not painful exactly but to have permanent pins and needles/numbness in two fingers for 4 months has been rather frustrating. IP: Logged |

Thanks Faith I meant to comment on how beautiful your writing was on the smoking thread. It was like a carcass being expertly carved, wasting nothing of the experience. Not sure if that's as flattering as intended but that's how it seemed. But my mind wasn't in that place yesterday - wish I had now. Anyway I appreciate your writing too. also I get the impression one day you'll use your creativity more and you just don't seem ready to - maybe having young children because it feels like you are sitting on it sometimes, like you are waiting for something IP: Logged |

Children with ADHD tend to have creativity that is off the charts (if it isn't stifled and they are encouraged to express it). IP: Logged |

Creative people are very sensitive (Pisces or Neptune emphasised in their birthchart)In actual fact, "mental disorders" originate in childhood, and are merely the result of unhealthy dysfunctional parenting that the child was exposed to. Because of the sensitivity of creative children, they are more adversely affected, - Hence the common link with "mental disorders" IP: Logged |
