My niece just completed 8th grade and will be starting High School and seeing her graduate 8th grade the other night made me reflect on my teenage years. My life went totally wrong right about the time I was her age. When I was a teenager I was what some call a latch key kid. I would come home from school and was basically alone all evening. Scratch that I was always alone. I woke myself up in the morning, caught the bus, went to school, and came home afterwards and did my own thing. I was unsupervised most of the time and didn't have any kind of structure, discipline, or direction in life. As a result of chaos in my family life, the factors I already mentioned, and the fact that I was in a new school with new people I just kind of checked out of life. I wasn't active socially and didn't go to school half the time. I just kind of withdrew into myself and didn't participate. I think falling asleep at the wheel during my teenage years has defined my life up to this point and is the reason my life has been so frustrating and f*cked up. I don't think people have a clue how important those years are unless they f*cked up during that period of life like I did. It's hard to move forward when your development has been stunted in so many ways. I look back at all those wasted years and wish I could go back in a time machine and fix it but I can't. I'm going to college in August and I'll finally be making some progress in life after spinning my wheels for the past 6 years. Gotta make up for lost time...IP: Logged |

Hey Aquaguy,I'm sorry you didn't have company and nurture during those vital years. It can take a while to create oneself in the absence of healthy role models or peers, but it sounds like you are embarking on that journey. Trust your instincts, reflect like hell, and do what you love. I wish you all the best for college. You can do this. IP: Logged |

I spent my teenage years wishing they would be over already because I thought it would all change once I became an adult. And things would just be better. Little did I know that the teenage years build a foundation for the adult ones. And that nothing really changes. But then again, I'm really glad I m not one of those people that peaked in high school, either mentally, emotionally or physically. I know a lot of those people and they either can't stop reliving their teenage years, or they think being a hot shot in high school makes them a hot shot now. IP: Logged |

Teen years can be very difficult, that's so true. I'm sorry you had such a hard time. You're not alone, though. It makes it harder to crawl out of but it's more than possible and can make you a stronger person in the end.IP: Logged |
