I don't understand how asking someone to clarify their gender can ever be taken for an insult?

If you prefer not to say, just say that.

But when a debate is about sexism, women and men do see it differently, too often...so if you are appearing to take the side of the misogynists, people will wonder how you arrived at that position? Are you a sheltered man who has no empathy for the opposite sex (as AG presents himself) or a woman who hates women, or....?
